Stage 1 is usually for low to mid rpm performance. Stage 2 (requires valvetrain upgrade) is mid to top end rpm performance, and Stage 3 (requires valvetrain upgrade) is for top end rpm performance... With that being said, I would just get stage 1 for a DD.
Not true at all. Hks makes drop in cams that don't require a valvetrain upgrade. However, for example, bc 272s will be much more effective than hks 272s because of added lift, but they need springs at least.
On a dd, I wouldnt go over 272s. 280s will shift your powerband to high without cam gears. 272/272 hks cams would make a nice setup though.
Do we have to call them stages?

Would picking up a used set be fine or should I go new or regrinds?
It is true, most camshaft companies use a Stage rating on there cams to show a range of duration. But some Companies use the duration instead of a Stage. For example Crower 4G63 Stage 1 264/264 Camshafts (Mitsubishi Evo 8) - Modern Automotive Performance these Crower Stage 1 cams for the 4g63 have a low duration of 264/264. after this duration and depending on the manufacturer. You will need upgraded valvetrain and tune. But you should always consult with the manufacturer what they recommend.

Uh.......Yeah.......Cause Need for Speed Underground does!!!!!!!!!

I thought they had 5 stages in that tho? Why do we only have 3 in real life?
stage1: put in cams
stage2:
stage3: profit
Its really about what you are looking for in a daily driver. I went from stock cams to GSC S1 (268/268), and what a difference, I think these should have been the stock cams. But I am looking for more power in a daily driver. If you are trying to keep the bottom end, HKS 264/264 or 264/272 are great, or any replicas such as FFWD DKS. You will not sacrifice bottom end, maybe alittle with the 264/272.
Its not so much the duration is the problem, its the added lift where it gets troublesome. Obviously added duration at high rpms with bad springs will also cause valve float.
I never said the duration was the main factor for the need of a valvetrain upgrade!.. I said that duration is how the companies title them. Plus both of your sentences cancel each other out. So why bother posting?...All you need to say is lift is a factor, leave it at that, and stop bringing me down to you level of stupidity!
Chill out man, no body said anything offensive to you. IF you can't stand someone not agreeing with you than maybe the internet isn't for you.

I just don't get why the only thing most people on this website look at is duration.. There is so much more to a cam then the duration. Lift, lobe separation angle, overlap, and ramp rates should be considered as well. But in general, a 264/272 or 272/272 combo would be a good choice for a DD as you won't lose too much bottom end and will improve top end significantly.
Well put
what a noob

How do you figure?.. He just stated duration was how they title them. There is no need to throw in angle, overlap.. yadda, yadda, yadda.. You dont seem very smart dude!
Your mom was a noob, but I taught her the ropes
