is cam knocked out

I just rebuilt my 1984 carbeurated 302, Was running quiet and now has a rattle or loose sound when reved up. did my new cam get knocked out? I have rebuilt this engine with new standard main amd rod bearings, new oil pump, water pump, fuel pump. timming chain and gears, and yes a new cam and lifters lunatti256-262. when I started it it ran fine and quiet, now ithas a slight knocking at idle and sounds really loose and knocking when driving just before shifting. auto trans. and makes the same rattle when reved up. it drives fine and has no problem taking the throttle. just a rattle in upper rpms. I find it hard to beleive it would be the main or rod bearings since I replaced them with standard stock ones. this engine only had 79400 miles at rebuild. Thanks

I'm not so sure you will find your answer here being it is FORD. This is a DSM site. Is there no ford website for you to get help on this subject?

Pull the valve covers and check for play in the rockers. Are you using a high zinc oil for the flat tappet cam or just something random? It is possible that you have a rod bearing problem also. You will never know until you check it out though.

My vote is on a loose cam chain. Tighten her up a bit and see if it helps, I wouldn't think that trucks that early had auto adjusters.

Not really the right forum.
But this is funny I had a customer that did the same thing on a Mustang.
Rebuilt the OE motor & it started ticking. Then it just got louder & louder.
Then it was a knock.

It was a tought one to figure out, but it was the pistons he used.
You would be suprised even quality names you know have lower product lines that are on the cheap.

But doing some research small block fords seem to be having this issue here & there.

There is no tension adjuster on a v8 like this. The chain goes over the gears, you slide the gear on the cam and bolt it on. The chain would have to be very very stretched to make any kind of noise.

I would go back through and check the valve lash. You could post a video of it as this will help us to determine possible causes.

That is the fist step I will take, and yes I am using a high zinc oil by Lucas. seems to have power but it does miss a little. Thanks though

Thaks and your right there is no adjustment on the chain and gears. doubt the chain is stretched in 25 miles.
will start at the top and work my way down and see whats up.

thanks , the pistons are stock as well as everything but the cam, and the pistons haven't been out just changed the bearings.

Just stumbled upon this site when I put in for ford it sent me here and its not telling me it was for your type cars in the beginning....do you know of a ford website that has a help thread like this....we all have the same pricipal in mind. Thanks
