i rebuilt my block for the first time myself. after i drove it about 10 miles the cylinder #3 bearing spun. i thought maybe i just did something since it was my first time. so i bought a new rebuilt block from a guy who builds 4g63s for a living. everything was brand new and acl main and rod bearings. after 1500 miles cyl #3 jsut spun again. i used the same oil pump on both blocks but i cleaned the pump up really good with brake cleaner. i also cleaned the oil pan and oil pick up until they were perfect. i also got a new oil filter housing. im stumped. i want to rebuild it again but i need to figure out why the bearings for cyl#3 spun twice on two different blocks. Any one have any ideas?

Clearance, and/or improper fastening/torquing. Inefficient amount of Oil/Oil Pressure as well as be the cause, the list can continue on. The reasons given are the most common though.

Was the crank new or used? Was it used in both builds? Possibly a journal out of round if it was a used crank.

i plan on replacing the oil pump on the next one. the crank was different in both blocks. but the crank in the second block was remanufactured. this might be a dumb question but does cyl #3 get oil to the bearings different from the others? or was it just probably a coincidince it happened to #3 twice?

I am also wondering the same thing. I had a hole in My oil pan and noticed the oil leak in time to shut the car off. I coasted to the side of the road and watched the rest of the oil drain out. I managed to spin the #3 rod bearing bad enough to have to replace the crank and rod.

Use the same oil cooler on both engines? If so, there's your problem on engine #2.

Whatever turbo was on these engines is likely in bad need of a rebuild as well.

take off the intake pipe and check for shaft play

The #4 gets oil last in line, then #3 and so on...

I'd suspect bad oil supply, but you would think you would spin #4 first or also.. What's the oil pressure at during idle/cruise/wot? If you don't know this, I would recommend you get an oil pressure gauge before the next build.

One last thing.. These were different rods correct? You stated new block, crank, and bearings, but nothing about the rods. You may have an out of round big end that was not accounted for..
