so, I've slowly been getting parts together to rebuild my 96 GST. I do know that the intake cam is threaded for the CAS, but from all the parts that came with the car (previous owner disassembled) I don't have the round CAS, but i have a pair of pickups... looks like they sit under the cam gears... and there's a separate sensor for the crank. every time I call Mitsubishi for parts... they never know what to send me (quite frankly i think 1/2 are the biggest idiots I've ever spoke to)... do i have the wrong electronics? or is this correct...do i have any other little differences in my car vs late 96+? pics soon.

I think you have an intake cam out of a 97-99 Motor....
90-94 CAS were just slotted..and lined up with a slot on the cam (No threads in the cam...)...Located on the passenger side or the head...

95-96 CAS was bolted under the intake cam gear...Not sure if there are threads or even if the cam was slotted....Located on driver side of car....

97-99 CAS Was BOLTED to the intake cam, threads inside the cam, and was lined up with slots (1g style)Located on passenger side of motor

90-94 CAS was round
95-96 was much like the 2g Crank Position Sensor...

97-99 CAS Is more Squarish...Look under that blue hallman MBC...

thanks for the info.. I just got the head and cams back from the machine shop, the cams were a little rusty but good looking now, I'm just not sure on this.... isn't the pass. side of the exhaust cam flat and the intake has a grove/threads? and yes, my CAS is under the intake cam like in the top picture, but there's a sensor for the exhaust cam too.... there's two of them, as well as a crank sensor. I haven't seen this engine assembled. I take it it's just a plug that goes in the place of the circular CAS like on the exhaust cam? hate to sound like a noob, I'm just new to DSM's. had it been all together before I got it, LOL it'd be a different story, just wanted to say thanks for the help in current and in advance :dsm:

Yes passenger side of exhaust cam is flat/round...
Passenger side of intake cam is slotted and tapped for a bolt...

Pics would help...
As they says pics are worth a thousand words....

il have pics up as soon as i can get the car back in... all the parts are in it, most likely tommorow

Similar question. My 97 GST has this:

How do I make it work?

ok here's the pics i took, sorry it took so long to get them up
note, all these parts came off of the car, yet everyone local to me cant figure the cam sensor out....

^^ this is my strange CAS

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091735.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091735.jpg" border="0" alt="crank angle sensor"></a>

^^ yet I have a crank angle sensor

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091722.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091722.jpg" border="0" alt="weird thingy"></a>

^^ what in the world is this?

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091747.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091747.jpg" border="0" alt="tming"></a>

^^ intake cam has the pick up ring on it, yet the exhaust gear has 2 timing lines?

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091736.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091736.jpg" border="0" alt="cams"></a>

^^ the intake cam is on the left right?

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091742.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091742.jpg" border="0" alt="why only one plug?"></a>

cam seals, yet only one plug? what do I put inplace of the sensor like the post above?

<a href="http://s646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/?action=view&current=1020091745.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu189/boostantix/1020091745.jpg" border="0" alt="mach up of top end"></a>

^^ yet the top end all lines up great, spins freely, but I can't figure out these top sensors, most people have the square/round one on the intake cam on the passenger side, or they have one sensor on the intake cam under the gear, yet I have 2 sensors up top, and a crank sensor.... I'm going to start putting everything on the block back to par (swapping the crank sprocket since the one on it has a chunk missing) and redoing all of my timing components and getting the head on, I just would really like to know if I have the wrong electronics... I'll start taking the sensors out to the car and looking for connectors they fit, I'm still dumbfounded by the cam sensor having one for the intake and exhaust, because obviously, the exhaust cam gear has nothing for the sensor to read.

boostantix pic 1 I cant see for crap....If you think its the thing on the right that chould be the coolant temp sensor...
pic 2 is not the CPS that is your 95-96 CAS
Pic 3 is a barrel capacitor....It should be bolted to the top of your intake manifold...
Pic 4 Your intake cam is no doubt a 95-96 intake cam gear....All Cam gears has 2 timing mark lines on them....
Pic 5 Intake cam gear is in your RIGHT hand...notice the notchs? Not sure what year cam that is (I know 97-99 cams gears have threads inside the cam to bolt the bracket assembly/CAS to the cam) I'm not sure if 95-96's came with the notchs or not.....(I know for a fact all 91-94's Did though)
Pic 6 The 2 open area seals go on the cam gear side of the cams.....The plug would only be used if you choose to stick with the 95-96 style CAS
Pic 7 Looks nice....Personally to make life easy not sure if your doing a 6 bolt swap of not but I would buy a 6 bolt swap harness from JNZtuning. Everything would be a bolt in affair if you have a 95-96 car and tap in 1 wire for 97-99 car... Then you can just go buy a black top CAS from a 93-94 and your set....for about 100 dollars for wont have to really mess with the wiring....

Squirrel

I would just disconnect your CAS off your motor and swap it onto the new motor....But be warned you will need to swap intake cams....I dont think 95-96 motors are tapped to accept a bolt like the 97-99 Intake cams....BTW you know you dont have the cover on top of your motors CAS?

Yea I guess the question wasnt specific enough. The screw hole is missing so thats why I was asking how to make it work.Someone suggested tapping a hole on the cam while still in the engine.Thoughts? If I have to change the cam Ill change it,its just Im not familiar with whatever goes under the hood so I'd have to get someone to teach me.

I apprecite the help JFZERO.BTW the cover is off because I took the pics while working on it.

yes i realized that it was the CAS sensor i took the pic of from the car, yes i know the intake cam was in my right hand, no im not doing a 6 bolt swap, all of these parts were with the car, pic 1 has to pick ups that aren't magnetic, they press down and spring back, i know what the coolant temp sensors is, LOL my only remaining question as of now, is with the plug for the intake cam pas. side, do i just place that plug in as im putting the valve cover back on to seal the hole, or is there something eles that goes in there too. sorry i took these pics in a hurry, then i went through the electronics i have and figured what certain things were, but the item in the left of pic 1, WTF is that? it has purple wires tied together into one little pin of a plug/connector. and does anyone have a picture of placement for that barrel capacitor? and what exactly, is it for?

Squirrel... I prefer not to drill or tap anything on my car if it is ON the car....If possible I would like to take it off so I have a much easier time working with it...

Boostantix... Sorry if I stated some obvious info....No idea on the purple wires never seen them on any of my dsm's before....I would put some RTV on that plug and slap that valve cover on....

Just bolt that barrel capacitor anywhere on the manifold....Its there for noise insulation and crap....Electronic crap....Just please keep it connected and on the car.

Yea I guess stray shavings are trouble. Thanks Jim.

If anyone local is willing to help/teach me how to change the cams, the car is in a heated, well lit garage with tools and plenty of cold beer.PM me.Im a painter by trade so I can barter some paintwork.Id rather have someone that knows what theyre doing there than trying to figure out written instructions.Seriously.

Boostantix, didnt mean to whore out your thread, just seemed like the right place to post.

thanks guys, I"ll have more pics up as the build goes on tomorrow, head stud tightening sequence/process for ARP's. Follow factory sequence and just tighten until 89 ft LBS right? in like 3 sets of tightening? btw... copper spray is a bad idea last time I checked, cleaning the deck and head with alcohol until nothing shows on the pad is how I've done it in the past and never had a failure from MLS head-gaskets. Is there a better way to insure a good seal? I plan on running this car at 15 lbs or more in the near future... right now just trying to get it alive, but still strong enough to handle plenty more later...

Squirrel82- its cool :dsm: cant blame ya :hellyeah:

everything went together pretty soon. no pics yet, i didn't have my phone on me when i was working on the car. only missing the fuel rail spacers, and an exhaust. cant wait to drive it :)

I hate to bring This up from the dead but I'm having trouble starting my motor. I ordered a motor and I know it came out of a 95 or 96 because where the CAS is. If you look at post #7 that's the trouble I'm having. I swapped the intake cam with my 98 stock cam the head is completely stock. I put my 98 CAS in and plugged it in and the car will not start. I'm getting fuel spark and compression I Just don't know how to make this work. If you take a look at the second picture in post #8 that sensor is still in the car. My question is how can I get this thing started. I crank it and its so close to start the rpms jump up a little but its just not working

Wow, I'm the only one replying to this thread??? WTF

Make sure the motor is at TDC for starters....

Then the 2gb CAS has to be in correctly....You CAN have it 180* out....There should be a painted mark on the CAS that painted mark will face the sensor or back towards the intake manifold...

Make sure you that done and report back in to me.

Yeah I agree with the post above; if you're using the original cam and CAS everything should just work like stock. Make sure you didn't bolt that little center piece onto the end of the intake cam backwards.

Another possibility is that your lifters all popped up when you pulled the cam, and the valves now aren't shutting all the way. Sometimes letting them bleed down overnight will help.

Got it fired up. I checked the sensor like you said and it was fine. I ended up swapping around the plug wires and it finally started up :applause:
