Squealing Noise Symptoms

-After driving for about 30 minutes this light squealing noise starts to happen and it is coming from front wheels (trust me, I leaned half way out the window while driving).

-Squealing noise changes from deeper at high speed to higher at low speed.

-When cruising in neutral, with no brakes, the sound continues (thus ruling out the brakes).

Could it possibly be the bearings? What do you guys think I should check for?


I've read the other Threads about what I am describing but their answers were never resolved or didnt fit what I am about to describe. So please don't tell me to use the search button. I've used it more than days you have been alive.

I've had this squealing noise happen to me. Does the noise get louder when you turn on your A/C in the car?For when the A/C is engaged their is a load applied to the clutch pulley. My problem was the pulley that runs my A/C pump it was wobbling and I noticed a little play in the belt. When I turned my A/C on, the squeal noise got loud and very annoying. I then tightened the belt alittle more it got even louder, for me. I had to replace my whole A/C unit for mine would only work now and then. You can also remove the belt until you get a new one. Thats so you dont have to hear the noise.

Does it squeal when you are stopped like its coming from the motor? Or does it only do it while moving?

once pads get so far gone, they can squeal even while coasting without applying the brakes. The shims cause it. I also had a caliper do it, have you checked it?

I got to give my car a wash today so I'll check them out before i do the cleaning i guess.

Are the dust covers rubbing on the rotors?

remove both accesory belts and drive it for a couple minutes to rule out any of those. If thats not it spray your brakes with brake parts cleaner. If that doesn't help check all of your brakes, and pull out the wheel bearings and repack them. If that still doesn't solve it, then you should look into other places where the noise is coming from

have you checked to see if it makes the noise when you are moving with the car off? when you brake does the sound go away? is it changing with speed or rpms? is the noise different when you accelerate and when you are decelerating? did this noise all of a sudden start? did it progressively get worse? or did ya do something then it started?

oh yeah... push n pull on the top n bottom of the tire with it in the air and see if you can get it to rock.. or wobble... easy to tell signs of a bad wheelbearing.

Yes it makes the noise when moving, even with car off and rolling in neutral.
When car comes to a complete stop.
Pitch gets higher at lower speed.
It hasn't progressively gotten stronger.

I'll try pushing on the wheel to see if i can get it to rock.

i say something is up with the brakes. bad pads, or the rotors, or something.
i had a noise kind of like this, ended up being the little metal pieces holding the brake pads on were touching the rotor.

Make sure you get on checking your brake pads. Def. dont put it off like I had with my other. I completely forgot about it cause it went away. Then out of no where it came back. Turned out the brake pads with the wear clips were still pretty good, but the other ones werent. Bad enough that one nearly fell off.

put your car up on jack stands and turn the front wheels.... check out your brakes (anything unusual rubbing including the dust cover, the scraper clip part. pads that are bad. well, with it up on jacks you could pretty much just about stick your ear up to the noise. if you have access to a body lift. i would put it up on there and let the wheels turn.

but with the car off the ground and your head right next to the wheels you should be able to hear and feel where it is coming from. make sure everything under there is tight...
