anyone had these problems with the punishemnt kit?

well my 1st problem is the jpipe, it is off centered really bad, the welding is in the way of getting a bolt in the hole. the pipe is angled wrong it makes my intercooler pipe when i connect them do under the turbo, in the way of the down pipe and o2 housing. My second problem is the pipe the goes from the jpipe to intercooler. it is way to long, when its connected to the intercooler it hits my oilfilter housing, the pipe is just as long as the one that goes from the intercooler to blow off valve (i dont think it should be that long) its seriously the same pipe on both sides just one has a 90 degree bend in it and the other is like a 75 or 80 degree bend. the intercooler, and all the piping after the intercooler are perfect fits great, but both pipes between the turbo and intercooler are to big or the wrong angle. i was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and does anyone have pics of the punishment 8" shourt route kit for a 1g? i compared my pics to the ones one punishments website and my piping how it looks and how its in the car is just all wrong :(

Try switching the pipes from the turbo to the intercooler and the other one around. I did that too and had poor fitment until I swapped them, though I believe I still aways generally made contact with the altenator.

Also, the J-pipes aren't the best from Punishment. The kit overall is pretty good for the price and aesthetically pleasing, but the J-pipes are so horrible that I ended up cross-threading the feed on my 16g compressor housing where it bolts to the J-pipe. That and I always had to take it off 1/5 a turn at a time with a wrench. One side fits well, the other doesn't. Total PIA.

Agreed! I had problems with fitment on my kit as well. I contacted PR, sent a picture, called 2 more times w/ no answer or response... I ended up cutting a little over an inch off the drivers side pipe as they had sent me the wrong pipe (allegedly for a 3k) and I was tired of waiting for the replacement which still hasn't show up. To clear the alternator I used an alternator belt for a 98 galant es (I think, I crossref'd carquest k040384) that moved the alternator about as far up as the power steering pump allowed. Even with the problems it's still half price of most fmic's, it's just a giant PITA is all. Oh and minor means 1"x2"x34" chunk out of your bumper support... That's not exactly minor in my book.

well i didnt have any problem with punishment i sent the email to them last night and they replied about a hour later then sent pictures and got everythign taken care of, but i just cut most of my bumper support off and hey at least you still have a bumper some poeple cant even have one with other kits. i still think this kit is one of the best i've seen and tim at punishment has helped me alot, from sending me insturctions for the kit, to helping me with the whole jpipe thing and talking to me about the custom o2 hosuing i want :thumb::thumb:
 
I had similar problems this summer when I put mine on. I emailed Tim a couple of times, and it got taken care of. I found that some of the pipes were a little longer than what they should have been, but I was able to take care of it by loosening up the alternator and using a shorter belt. It also helped that I run a GM MAF, so I was able to cut a nice chunk off the cold pipe.
 
You guys do realize punishment doesn't make these kits right? They buy them and re-sell them for a profit. This is the "lan" kit which was created by a member on here. IMO the kit is nice. Let me rephrase, the hot side of the kit is nice. Shit goes sour on the cold side.

do you know this for a fact? also most the people have trouble with the hot side not the cold side

I'm not saying this is a bad kit at all. I'm just a little disappointed in how PR started off strong with my particular dealings with them (payment communication errors) and then tapered off dramatically at the end. You can't expect everything to fit everything but this is far from a simple bolt-on affair. A bolt on can be 'unbolted' and the car returned to stock. There is NO WAY to 'bolt' the cut metal back into the holes. That's my justification of my opinion is all.

I thought FMIC were bolt on's? I also am not content with the kit.:rolleyes:
 
well having inlarged holes wont stop your car from going back to stock its not like anything has to be removed for this kit. the only thing i did was took off a/c becuase it didnt work anyway, and cut the hole larger where the stock hose goes for the intercooler due to i put my catch can there
 
Okay this is an advisory of what just happened to MY car (your results may vary but at least keep an eye/ear on it). After a lot of work on my car, and finally getting all the bugs out I thought, I took a semi extended drive of about 20 miles. Car started overheating again so I pull over, let it cool, check everything again, try to go home. I hear a god-awful screech followed by the battery and waterpump lights coming on dimly. WTF? I think to myself and check the SHORTENED BELT I had to use for clearance issues. It's a little loose so I figure I'll tighten it back up when I get home. A quick 2k throat clearing blip of the throttle later and the screech stops but the two lights are now on full blast and power steering has gone bye-bye... I rightfully think the belt was thrown but having no alternative (no pun intended) try to get home with cool down times planned. After getting to a well lit gas station I pop the hood, try to screwdriver wedge the belt back on and realize 'huh? the belt goes right back on and it's loose?' I'm thinking maybe the belt has stretched somewhat after 50-60 miles and maybe I can borrow a wrench and readjust, go home on power... Well, I got the tools, adjust the belt and it seems even more loose than it was before?!?!? I finger check the deflection and find out that it wasn't the belt... The friggin' SHAFT of the ALTERNATOR had apparently sheared off! I can't say for sure that it was the shortened belt putting more stress on it or if the alt was going bad before hand but if you hear ANY noises up front and you've changed to the short belt to get your alternator off the hot side pipe... I'd recommend going back to the original belt and let the alternator fend off the heat on it's own. I'm putting my spare alternator on the car in a little bit and if it starts with the rumbling I'll be doing the same myself.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to blame the FMIC for shearing the shaft, I'm just trying to make anyone else running a short belt for whatever reason aware of a potential problem since I recommend a belt that might have been the cause in this thread. I'll update with a before/after photo once I get it all changed and running again tonight/this morning.
 
well with my car i need to cut and reweld the jpipe to make it work good, but for now i am doing something a little ghetto to the car to use the front mount. its going to be a home made jpipe adapter thing LOL. its just going to be temp until i get the car from my house to my brohters
 
Update without pics (for now camera is in other car). The alternator didn't shear, the nut came off due to vibrations possibly? It's a major PITA to change and after many failed attempts to 'finesse' it out, I ended up pulling the bumper and hotside pipe after loosening the couplings to the front mount. I've done some weird stuff to change an alternator before but pulling the bumper takes the cake! Just taking the power steering pump won't give you enough clearance if you have slimline fans on an aluminum radiator like I do so make sure your nuts are tight... On a sadder note I think the motor is boga-toast now due to overheating. Do yourself a favor and don't try to make it to a gas station... Just do like Patrick Swayze said in Red Dawn "Just get up there and :shhh: in the radiator" if you have to. What a suck end to a suck day.
 
got my intercooler on today and car running with the new turbo :). I havent drove it yet, due to coolant lines leaking and it was late so im fixing the leak tomorrow its just a hose clamp. but the kit looks great i love it, only had to mod. one pipe, but im not blaming it on punishment beacuse i bouthg the kit from a friend who bought it from punishment so my friend may of mixed up two pipes
 
I still think the kit is great for the price. Sure, some things had to be tweaked, and was a headache/PITA during install, but after everything was done and reinstalled, the kit performs flawlessly and looks great too. The nice thing about the cold side pipes being a little too long, was that I could angle them downward and remount the coolant bottle in the stock location on top of the pipe. The only downside is the overheating issue that arises. But a simple 180* thermostat should take care of that.

Yes it's fact... Look at the coldside setup, it's a joke. Why is the bov sitting so high? Why wasn't it made to huge the tranny some more?

I tried to remount the stock bottle but couldn't quite get it to stay put after hard acceleration. I couldn't get the zip ties mounted right I guess. I went with a cheapo autobone style universal mounted over the cold side pipe but then had problems with the overflow line contacting the pipe. What style turbo intake are you using to clear the bottle neck? I'd like to get everything lined up before the engine build since I'm allready a few grand overbudget as is BEFORE the rebuild :). Another side effect of being a Demented Sado-Masacist I guess.

Car looks sharp though asd, I like that burnt orange.
 
Here are some pics for how I mounted my bottle. I'm using a Dejon intake pipe and in order to clear the bottle, I went to Home Depot and got a 3" PVC strainer. It was the only PVC piece that was 3" OD that would fit in the coupler and filter. I took a die grinder and cut away the grates that are molded in order to have a hollow tube. The nice thing was that the strainer was ~ 2" long and gave enough clearance for the filter to clear the bottle. And if you notice, the cold pipe is actually angled down a little bit so it would connect with the TB easier. This allowed the coolant bottle to utilize part of the stock bracket. Then in order to keep the bottle from tipping over, I strapped a zip tie around the neck and attached it to a misc. bracket already on the car (Pic 2 - circled in red).

What I did was close to that. I actually had one zip where yours is and another towards the fender. Must have been the two axis stress popping it off the stock tabs. I'm wondering if a couple cheap metal rulers pop riveted into the stock ones to extend the contact would work if I braced them together and to the inner fender as well? Good tip on the pvc extender too!
 
I assume that the rulers would work, provided that they are braced/sturdy enough to handle the forces that are acted on it. Remember that since there is fluid in the reservoir, the load placed on the rulers would be dynamic, meaning that it will change with the direction of acceleration.
Another idea that I had was to drill out the stock spot welds and fab an adapter bracket the would still bolt to the stock location, but raise the point where the coolant bottle makes contact. The downfall of this is that you are limited to how high you can place the bottle, otherwise the neck would hit the hood. Keep it posted on how you do it, because that would be great advice for anyone thinking about running a short route FMIC.
 
i just have mine sitting on the pipe on the cold side coming off the intercooler, it is kinda wedged between the intake side of the stock radiator fan and sits on the intercooler pipe, as for the coolant over flow on the pipe i just took some fuel line i had at my house and made it long enough off the bottle so it go past the piping

anyone have this kit with the greddy flange? i bought mine and when i got it the flange was for a 1g and just had an extra set of bolt holes in it that arent even tapped
 
I just got the fmic kit from pr and i am having fitment problems with the pipes coming from the blow off pipe to the intercooler. the pipe is not bent back far enouth. it's off by 5".. anybody have any ideal..
