Try hooking it up as AWDTSIer explained to you. The neg post needs to see a ground wire. The positive post needs to see a power wire (ignition on... NOT constant). And, the unlabeled post is for the sending unit wire. There's nothing wrong with your gauge, it's completely normal for it to react the way it did when it's hooked up incorrectly.
