FP18g or PTE3231 - help me decide

As many of you know my current Ebay turbo is on its way out, so I need something to replace it. My car is auto and I have 650cc injectors in there now. I am really concerned with spool time since my car is auto. I am looking to hit the 400whp mark and run the 1/4 mile in the 11's. If I go with the 18g, I wont have to change my injectors, and I can keep my piping configuration the same. If I go with the PTE3231 I know I will need at least 750cc injectors, change my I/C pping around, and I will have no idea how spool will affect my car. My current turbo(ebay 20g) takes a whole 8 seconds on the line to spool, and it doesnt reach full spool till about 3900 rpm. Anyone with these two turbos or similar please post your experience.

I'd recommmend the FP 18G-6SL2 or the PTE 5027E.

I think the 54-trim wheel combined with the Stage 3 turbine on the 3132E would be a little too laggy for your Auto.

I don't have any personal experience with the 18G-6SL2 to give you it's spool characteristic, but it may be a little laggier than a 18G with a TD05H turbine.

You can't compare spool RPM of an eBay turbo to that of a MHI unit or one that was built with MHI parts. Just for kicks I weighed the MHI Big 16G, MHI EvoIII 16G, and eBay Evo III compressor wheels at work on our paint scale....the eBay Evo III compressor was the heaviest of the three.

I knew the ebay turbo was heavier, and that is probably why the lag was so bad. You seem to give alot of good advice and I have been leaning towards the 18g. I also have a friend who is running the 18g and he says the spool is pretty quick. The only reason i wanted the 54 trim was for more power. But I really dont need all that power for my goals. Do you have any idea what the power difference is between the 18g and the 50 trim?

My cousin has the ebay-style 16G and it seems to spool a few hundred RPM later than my real Evo 3 16G. Other than that it seems to work really good.

And that later spool makes a world of difference.

Perhaps if you chose a MHI TD05H 20G you'd be much more satisfied with the spool RPM than you were with the eBay 20G.

The 20G compressor would be more comparable to a 50-trim in terms of airflow. Going with an 18G may be a step back in terms of airflow, but if it's a TD05H 18G you may achieve the power you want at the RPM you want it at.

Yes, but it will come at a cost of added lag.

Unfortunately you have to choose whether you want the turbo to spool quick or flow well. You can't have both.

Anything that spools faster than what I have now will make me satisfied. How do you feel about the FP Big 28? They say it spools at 3k rpm but they don't mention any power or flow statistics.

Here is what I am thinking: the FP 18G-6SL2 should spool faster than this pos ebay 20g and still flow better. Ebay claims this 20g flows at 640cfm but I highly doubt it. The 18g flows at 600cfm.

I just went to the track and nailed a 1.8 60'. What do you consider a good 60'?

Keep in mind that I don't need to spool at 3000 rpm but I don't want to spool at 4000rpm either. If I can get the 18g and have it spool by 3500rpm and still have the advantage of the TD06 flow that would be perfect for me. Also, I spoke with Hung from Extremepsi and his advice was to get the PTE 50 trim with 0.48 A/R ratio to help with spool. Thoughts?

A good buddy of mine ran a TD05H 20G for about a year on his stock 2G 7-bolt....it made 20psi by 3800rpms. Now the car has a Frank 5 20G (60-trim compressor, TD06H turbine) and BC0101 cams (272/272), it's more like 4200 before it sees full boost.

I would expect the 18G-6SL2 and the TD05H 20G to spool about the same, with the 18G possibly getting the nod for better airflow. The 20G compressor can produce more air, but in that case you're limited by the TD05H turbine's flow potential.

My bigest concern is buying the FP18G and then not being satisfied with the power output. I guess I could always get meth in the future instead of upgrading turbos.

i have the fp 18g-6sl2 on my car right now. i hit full boost about 3800ish with fp2 cams. car made 370whp at the tire on 24 psi through stock intake manifold. i just put a sheet metal manifold on my car and i should have no problem cracking 400 whp with similar boost levels. this was done on race gas.

and to crack your 400 whp mark you will probly need bigger injectors. ive got 1150's and i see 58 to 60% injector duty cycles. so if you really push it you will probly see close to or right at 100% duty cycles.

So you made 370whp with cams and race gas. Im looking to get 375 to 400 on pump gas. Maybe I should go with the 50 trim.

I think the 50 trim is the best when it comes to upgrading to a bigger turbo and still maintain the dd drivability. T28 is the same as 16g, and 18g has a little more balls than the 16g...so if i was you i would stay away from these three turbos since you already have a 20g and the flow is a lot better than all of them. Now 50 trim has a little a bit of a bigger compressor wheel than the 20g, but you can reach 400hp easy and i think you hit full boost at around 3800 rpm. I think 20g is considered a 48 trim.

Yes I believe it is a 49 trim. Does anyone have any insight on my earlier post about getting the 50 trim with the smaller A/R ratio to combat lag?

That would work, so would getting a Stage 2 turbine (5027E) versus the Stage 3 (5031E)....but both will come at a cost of flow and/or max HP.

So then how would you feel about getting the PTE 3227(480hp) w/ 0.48 A/R. Its a 54 trim compressor wheel and a 69 trim turbine wheel.

I think you'd be in the same situation as if you had a TD05H 20G....the compressor wheel would outflow the turbine, and the turbo wouldn't be able to perform to it's potential.
