I just rebuilt a motor for a 92 talon that was given to me and started it today for the first time ever and I don't know whats up with the shifter mechanisms.

I can't put it into 1st or Reverse the 1st position I can't even push forward in and when I attempt R it's actually 4th gear?

I did something wrong somewhere.

most likely ## cable needs adjusted. its probably not lifting the lever enough to get into gear

It sounds like something is blocking the entire movement of the shift linkage in the engine bay; I would try to manually shift it into gears by disconnecting the shift cables from the transmission and go through the gears (be sure the vehicle is off).

More than likely you have a wire, hose, etc. blocking the complete movement of your shifter linkage on the transmission.

Otherwise, you have either a damaged shift cable, or a seized shift bracket pivot point or worn out plastic shift pad on the shift linkage bracket.

I've seen it where the bolts weren't tight on the tranny mounts for the cables, but that generally makes it near impossinble to get into R and 5th.. Make sure al mounts are tight (don't over tighten then on the tranny, they will strip) Also check the shifter base itself in the car. And if everything is tight with those, then onto the cables.
