Decided on a 50 trim - But which one?

I've searched, but I haven't seen many threads on the 50 trims that I've picked out. I'm not exactly on a budget, but I'm a college student and I'm trying to save my money for books and the likes...so My budget is around 600-700 dollars. Anyway, here are the turbos I've picked out:

STM G50/60 - Should I go 50 or 60 trim? Why is the 60 trim typically cheaper than a 50 trim? Do they use Garrett housings/internals?
STMDSM - G50 - G60 Turbo

SBR 50 trim...or 60? Again, same questions apply. However, why is the 60 trim a hundred dollars cheaper than the 50 trim? In the description they say the use Garrett wheels, upon reading the ad further.

I'll be going externally gated mounted on the O2 housing via a Punishment Racing o2 housing that recirculates back into the DP. One of my big requirements is that it's a Mitsu bolt-on turbo.


I haven't looked around too much, so if you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks guys.


Oh yeah, I'll have a genuine MHI big16g for sale soon if anybody wants it. 10k miles on it, purchased from/installed at FFTEC. Comes w/ FFTEC J pipe.



Another question I had- on the 50 trim @ 20 psi, am I within the efficiency range of the turbo?
 
personally i do not like any of the turbos there. I would go for a PTE 50 trim they are nice turbos. That M-Trim is no goods no worth it. And you do not want a 60-trim not a great dsm turbo stick with the 50.
 
I've heard decent things about the SBR 50 trim, and the STM 50 trim looks similar.

I'm leaning towards the BEP 50 though, since they have more of a name behind their product.

I just want to know that these won't crap out in a year or less, basically. PTE stuff is pretty pricey, and I'm not sure if I can afford it. If I hear too many bad things about these, I may just stick with my 16g. I really do want a 50 trim though, so I have room to expand with my build.

Plus, I run pump gas, so the more efficient the turbo and the more power I can make at a lower PSI, the better.

Also, the SBR and STM 50 trim turbos look similar, but the STM 50 trim is about 100 dollars cheaper than the SBR. Anybody know why this could be? I'll be e-mailing Emery @ STM to ask him specs of their 50 trim turbo.

This is a very contradicting statement. If that was the case, we'd all be running some god-like turbo that makes 400awhp @ 20 psi that costs $700. I'm just chiming in to remind you that you should not be shopping for a VENDOR specific turbo, but rather a MANUFACTURER specific turbo. It's understood that all vendors sells these turbos, but you need to know what CHRA is within that turbo. For example, there was a period on which turbonetics CHRA (sold by almost all vendors including SBR, extremepsi, AGP,etc.) were not doing so well in the market. There was also that issue with the 270 vs. 360 bearings and the list goes on. Be sure you are shopping for what you're really getting. Again, using an example, some people thought the SBRG50 turbo was different than the RS49t turbo (back in the day, I'm pretty sure SBR has switched manufacturers for their CHRA), but in fact, it was the same turbo just with a different comp/turbine housing.
 
What I was trying to say that is for my horsepower goal, I'd be much better off running a 50 trim at, say, 18 psi, than a big16g at 22 psi. Intake charge temperatures would be lower and there'd be less stress on the turbos.

CHRA - I don't even know what it means. Could somebody explain it to me? I've just started to do research on a turbos actual internals instead of knowing names and that a bigger number means a bigger turbo.

Also, I'm asking for experience with these turbos. Build quality, durability, how long they'll last, etc.
 
Well, although not having experinece with those exact turbos, i can say that anything with a garrett CHRA the center section and rotating assembly, you can be sure it will last a long ime if properly taken care of. I've been running tehsame GArrett turbo for over 90K miles and it's still in perfect shape (save for slight beating that the comrpessor wheel has taken over the years )

I have a SBR G50 and do not have a single problem with 28psi on pump or race gas.
 
I've heard good things about the SBR, but what about the STM?
 
I'm going to have to say the ones on STM's site are the SBR turbos.
 
Ya the STM looks to be a SBR. Stay away from the m-trim whatever you do. Garett turbos look big but do not always flow big.
 
M-Trim, as far as I know, only the BEP has m-trim? What about the SBR and STM?

There are countless threads on the different 50-trim turbos. I'm too tired now, or I'd search for a link to some of the comparisons I've seen on this site. The M-trim is very outdated, and the V-trim if I remember correctly was a surge machine that didn't put out as much power as everyone hoped. The reason the standard 50-trim is a bit pricier than the 60-trim is because the compressor map on the 50-trim shows it to be more efficient. Like I said, there's a TON of info on this site on 50-trims. If I remember in the morning, I'll put some links up. With a good quality one though, you pretty much can't go wrong. I'd like something with at least an e-cover on the cold side. On a ball-bearing 5031R, spooling 20 psi by 3800 rpms seems to be the norm. That good spool, and 450 whp on pump gas, you can't go wrong. Awesome turbo to be shopping for, there's just so many variants.
 
I vote PTE all the way as I've had one and seen the quality of it and the power they put out.

The 50 trim can/will put out ~400hp between the 20-24 psi range as it had been proved over and over.

The 2 shops I can recommend personally is SBR and MAP. SBR has done me right for the most part but we won't turn this into a vendor review as this isn't the proper place. Give Joe a call (Ext 19) and tell him your goals.

Modern Automotive Performance (MAP) has some awesome deals and some top notch customer service. Kyle is the tech I talked to and I believe Dan is the sales rep I talked to.

At this point in your quest though I believe that you need to grab something to drink, sit down, and search so that way you make a educated decision on what you need based on what you want. If you want something to last then you want quality, if you want quality then you have to pay for it.

I went the time in my avatar at 23.5psi + some timing advance on meth/pump and she's got plenty more to go. By far my most favorite normal person (not 500+AWHP happy) street turbo.

If you are going thorough fftec and are having them do the work, why dont you just sit down with sean and discuss your goals. Sean knows dsm's like the back of his hand and tell you exactly what the setup will put down #'s wise on his mustang dyno, and what those #'s are good for in the real world (1/4 mile, top end pulls, etc.)

First things first, you really need to figure out exactly what you want to do with the car, then mod it so it will do that the best/most efficient way.

What turbo are you moving onto next?
 
well ill put in my 2cents, i had a 60-1 and ran 20psi and made 323hp on pump.
i couldnt make more than that and it would knock like crazy if i turned the boost up.
well the turbo took a dump and i put my 14b back on and dynoed it again and it made
300hp at 15psi. later i got a 18gsl2 and switched the car to e85 and 445hp at 28psi
and 400hp at 20-22psi. really i would go with the 18g or e3 16g over a 50trim, you
will have a better power band and a faster car.
 
I've got the new Boost Line 50trims from Precision. They made some revisions to the typical SCM5031 and added the option for a T3 VBand housing. have 2 on EVOs and they are VERY NICE

Marti, are these the ones that they call "Boosted" in their catalog? I've been seeing them listed in the PTE catalog for months but have never found any real info on what they really are. What's different about them anyway?
