Will a overheated engine cause a A/T to go into limp mode. My son had a coolant leak in his car last and at the same time the car went into limp mode (only 2nd gear). He took it to the dealer and got the leak fixed and the service tech told him that the tranmission fault could have been caused from the hot engine overheating the transmission. We just had some major work done on the transmission 6 months ago. I just want to make sure the A/T is not the problem again. The car has been running fine for about a week now. It's a 97 RS with about 82,000 mile on it.

Disconnecting the negative terminal for 15 mins should take the car out of limp mode.

If it still does it, that wouldn't be limp mode. Then I would wonder if it could be a problem with your transmission's computer which is inside the car.

Other then that, I would say transmission problem it could possibly be. Limp mode wouldn't only effect 2nd gear.

Check your coolant color and levels. The most common cause for our transmission's to go into limp mode are due to faulty input and output speed sensors.

Otherwise, the problem with your transmission shouldn't be directly related to the overheating.
