OBx gt35r??

To his defense I have seen the OBX advertisment in about 3 different legit magz and just because one went belly up doesn't mean they all will and if they warranty his and he doesn't have a problem more the reason to trust them. But I found another company I feel more comfortable diming up money for.

Who said I was gonna purchase one WTF

By the way I am aware of OBX parts for the 420a I own the intake manifold and it does fit and it does outperform the stock IM. The only better one is AMM's which is a custom made piece and a little harder to come by.

Yo Slippi84 I remember when you had the gt14 on the tsi from past posts. I went with the precision sc61 when it came time to choose. But after some reading, I have come to the conclusion that master power turbos perform well for a really good price. Check these out on this website, Master Power Turbos A lot of other websites sell them too. Master Power has an sc61 that goes for almost $600, when I spent about $900 on mine(Add $150 for oil lines). The main thing that you want to ask any person or company that you are buying a cheaper turbo from, is if they balance their turbos. If they give you some half-assed answer then don't even bother buying that turbo or brand. And believe me, you can tell when they give you a straight answer. I've done some calling and emailing to many different people on ebay about their turbos. There are some legit guys out there.

Yeah that was a fun build but the base of that build wasn't good so I just cut losses and moved on. Anyway I was actually looking at a company called SPA USA. They sell gt35r sized turbos with small t3 housings to help with spool for about 650-700 bucs and in 2005 they grouped up with Innovative so I figure that gave them the edge over the other companies. If I do come across some extra money though it's a s362 for me :rocks:

And still to this day, people ask if OBX is ok!?

Jesus people, OBX is no better than any Generic item out there. When it comes to important things, BoV, Wastegate, Turbo, AFPR's and Pumps, Rods and Pistons, Rotors things that require some serious R&D, dont go with the cheapest product.

There is a rule I live by.

Quality isnt cheap and cheap isnt Quality. Its easy to make an item look quality on the outside but inside is what matters, the reason why their products are so cheap is because of inferior materials and inferior construction. They need to skimp on the little things and those little things are what make the big things work. I would never in my life run a knock off turbo when it comes to something that needs to spin at 100,000 rpms and be precise. Think about it, your 420a is going to be doing a 15 second quarter mile if you are lucky, thats at the very least 1,500,000 revolutions for that turbo in that short period of time.

When it fails, not if, you will not only have spent $800 on the knock off but another $1200 on the real thing meaning, you will have paid $2000 for a $1200 turbo, does that sound smart? If you cant afford to mod then dont, this isnt a cheap game and turboing a 420a is by far not the cheapest or smartest route when you want reliability. I give you props though for trying and keep us updated.

Good luck.

You threw the props in at the end so you show that you didn't mean anything by this post so i'll hold back but this is the skinny as I see it and I'm not the be all end all but I have modded enough to know a little about a lot.

Name brand companies prey on people like you. You keep them in buisness with your concept of a good and bad part. The majority of teh time what's cheap is bad and what's expensive is better so people use that as their rule of thumb ALL the time, when in reality it isn't true ALL the time. I could sit here and spit off parts that I had that were cheaper versions that a company sold for more money and worked as good if not better but just believe me when I say it's true. Take your build. You have a car that a descent amount of mods all of which seem to be name brand and quality parts and I think that's cool and all but you ended up with and this is from yoru profile "Dyno run 261 awhp 247 tq ( Dec 05 ) Dyno run 274 awhp 254 tq( Jul 06 ) " Now while I give you props for trying that just seems like a lot of misspent money for performance that I have seen out of a ebay 16g turbo kit with ebay fmic both which are knock off and cheap parts. There is a guy who made a whole thread about a ebay turbo build who had better results. Some of the parts you listed are not even complicated parts. A wastegate and bov(by the way are tech the same just placed on intake vs exhaust side for argument sake) is nothing more than a piston with a spring. Nobody makes cheap rods and pistons and cheap rotors are what 99% of shops use and i'm talking about everyone from mom and pops to Firestone Pepboys and any other "BIG NAME" place around you. I know this because I sell those places their parts so I have a little more insight on parts and qaulity vs prcie than the average joe. There isn't really anything wrong with buying name brand I"m all about piece of mind just don't let piece of mind be confused with being naieve.

Have you ever tried using the majority of OBX products? They put little to no R&D in; (420a turbo manifold, 420a intake manifold, their cam gears, etc.) All of those products come not fitting, not lining up properly, or missing necessary items for them to work; all brand new. If you want to chance $800 to be another guinea pig, by all means go ahead.

R&D Department, I don't think OBX even has a R&D department. What they have is a reverse engineering department to copy the other products on the market & they can't even do that properly :tease:

I wonder if these OBX turbos work as well as the knock off Quaife LSD's they came out with for our application a few years back that wouldn't even physically work in our application

Sure a 1 year warranty is great but does anyone know if they'll even honour this warranty if something does happen. There are a tonn of companies out there that there warranties are worth less then the paper their written on.

For me, I give my money to companies that actually put R&D into their products & not just try & copy others on the market. If everybody starts buying the knock off crap, there won't be any of the "good" companies left, then what are the companies such as OBX going to copy

I'm glad you picked up on THE_EE's cheap shots while trying to praise "us 420a's" for our commitment..."your 420a is going to be doing a 15 second quarter mile if you are lucky".... Nice little sneak in there EE...

I agree with Slippi completely, A smart shopper doesn't just glance at the name brand and then pull out the credit card... Some companies that sell OEM or aftermarket use quality parts and often times will state their quality parts; Or with a little research, you can find their connection with big name companies. I'm not going to reiterate this point because Slippi covered this nicely, and he does have the first hand experience.

I myself wouldn't go the route of an OBX turbo mainly because their R&D are the customers that they ship their products out too. I've read problems at numerous forums (honda, neon, subaru...etc) of people who have tried their turbos and had horror stories. But when OBX gave them a new one, they stated that they had fixed the problem. The only reason they knew what the problems were was because of the customers who complained of the failures. I'm not saying all their turbos failed, but the good majority that did were heard about all over. I'm mainly referring to their turbos.
