Hi
I'm Eddie from Ruffin, SC (near Charleston, SC).
I've always been intrigued by the DSMs (1G the most) and how they can make so much power out of just 2 liters of engine.
I started like most in V8 RWD cars. First was a '85 Crown Vic ex-police car with a 351W. I then got a '93 Yamaha FZR 600 motorcycle and got my first taste of real speed. Got married and had to compromise for the baby and talked my wife into a '71 Plymouth Duster 340. She later got upset learning that seat belts were optional in those days. But, she let me keep it and later after some racing I got some knocking and decided to do my first engine swap.
I swapped in a 360 Mopar crate motor. That thing was crazy after that, but kept breaking motor mounts from the torque so I ended up selling it. I then got a Dodge Avenger ES with a 2.5L V6 and was pleased to learn that the 2G Eclipse shared some parts with the Avenger. Depressed when I found out that the base model came with a 420A and a 5spd which I didn't have.
I then decided on something different. I picked up a '02 Pontiac Sunfire SE that came with a crappy 2.2L OHV. Yep. You heard me right. A 4cycl with OHV technology from way back when. Raced it anyway until it knocked. Got inspired after seeing someone else do an Ecotec 2.2L DOHC swap and shave 2 seconds off thier time with a stock engine. I followed and it went well, but I was soon day dreaming about DSMs again.
More now because a friend at work owned a 1G Eclipse 5spd that he was looking to sell. It was primered flat black and ugly. I waited to see how low the price would go because it was running a 4G37. I got it just a few weeks ago for $380.
So, now I'm here. Dsm problems solved, but now I need power. Since, I've done a couple of engine swaps already, I figure what's one more? I've scanned a couple posts and have seen from someone that has done it that I only need 4 or 5 things. Which is less than it took with the Ecotec (engine, ECU, harness, radiator, trans, clutch, flywheel, motor mounts).
I came here to learn more about this group of cars and plan on turning this car into my full time strip car. I was running high 15s in the Ecotec, so I'd be happy with 13s. From what I've seen on here a 4G63T shouldn't have a problem getting me there.
Anyway, glad to finally be a part of the DSM crowd and hope to be faster soon.
