So today i decided to start taking the tranny out of the 420...lets just say it went a little too easy. for some reason it took me like 1hr and 30 mins to get it out, so thats like retarded simple, and i just was astonished that it was that easy. I'll keep you guys up on the project and i have some pics ill try to get in here. Also off topic i might wanna get rid of my spec 6 puck? good idea, bad idea? hit me back:dsm:

Get rid of the spec clutch, and go with a Southbend model. While the tranny is out, you might consider the 3.55 switch and a lsd if funding is available :thumb:

EDIT: ...and yes, they're not that hard hehe

...photobucket, imageshack, etc ???

EDIT: Also, shouldn't this thread be in the 420a drivetrain tech forum?

Listen we all know spec isn't the most popular clutch around here with the 420a crowd but if his clutch is holding his setup fine and he likes it why tell him to go out and buy a 6-900 dollar clutch. I don't doubt that SBC makes a better clutch but not worth getting rid of another aftermarket clutch that's doing it's job.

The NVT-350 with 3.55 swap may be worth looking into though and like he said the lsd but it's already been proven that the stock diff and axles combo will go 11's so there's no point in changing out perfectly good stuff just my .02

By the way what exactly did you do cause I was trying to be slick and take my engine out and put it back in with th trans still hookedup. I got it out without taking the trans off but forgot that was with the head off and now the new longblock is timed and everything.

Sure spec is working fine, just saying that there are lots of horror stories out there...

It's also already been proven WAY MORE TIMES that grenading, exploding, shrapnel, snapping, etc is bound to happen to all of us with stock components...even awddynamite has admitted to having it happen to him as well.

Why not just do the transmission once...and do it right

Yes...i agree with you for budgets sake, however if i had the money i would like to get a new clutch...i dont know if anyone has driven a stage 3 spec, but its not street friendly...it shakes a bit during engagement and its very stiff. I dont really have the money for the lsd right now, since the trans shop told me that my bill will be $1100 and some change to do my tranny. I guess the main shaft looks welded...cant be good:toobad: But good news is i got a tranny with a cracked housing and a blown diff:thumb: so hopefully lower bill!!! anyway...to answer your tranny question, all i did was unbolt the upper control arm and the tie rods also. I had to disconnect the brake line, and just pull the hub/brake/axle assembly straight out towards you as far as they will go without stressing the lower ball joints ans stuff. After those steps to each side of the front end i took out the battery and its mounting bracket, linkage, ghetto washer bottle, a few wires for visions sake, tranny bolts, transmount, and i just left the axels in the hubs, they just barely pulled out of the trans, but the whole thing got lowered onto my boys chest and we slid that shit right out...1hour and 25mins...and that was a learning expirience seeing as this is my first dsm. but im confident that with 2 guys, anyone who knows these cars should bang that out in an hour...if i did it again that would be my goal. (i left out taking apart my turbo and fmic+piping...but depending upon setup that may vary):dsm:

I think it's cause you got just a plain stage 3 whcih is a sprung 6 puck. I have a stage 3+ which is a street disk made with better material and a higher clamp load so that it will still hold 475ft/lbs trq and yes be able to be slipped and driven on the street without the problems your seeing. Yeah I'm going from stock with intake and catback to pretty much full blown 420a track car(unless you look at dsm-zero then it's more like a basic build compared to him LOL) and like X said I want to do it right the first time too but money doesn't grow on trees. The stock diff's are good it's the pins that come out on some units and the stock axles should survive as long as you keep wheel hop down. For me that's prothane motor mounts and suspension bushings with MT's:rocks:

yea, i am going to ask the trans shop to weld the diff pin, or possibly go with some safing brakets...i dont know. i would like to replace the diff but i'll have to wait and just baby my car until i can afford the quaife.:dsm:

You don't have to baby it the problem is not as comon as people would make it out to be. I don't like to refer to one car and say that it's possible for everyone but if awd is making 400ft/lbs on stock diff and got by for a little before anything happend to him the average joe smo at 300ftlbs or whatever should be fine. Actually at 300ft/lbs your not even a average 420a-t guy more like 250ftlbs

So with my car at about 300hp and maybe a bit more torque...you think my car is above or below average? ### i dont think its super fast or anything, but its fun! LOL anyways you think ill be fine?:dsm:

I think your car is above average as most guys have stage 1 turbo kits with 16g's or stage 2s with a 20g with around 200-275whp. Hell randy knows his shit and he has trouble hitting 300whp. Now if you think you have 300 crank hp then your about average. Either way I don't think you should worry as long as you don't go around dumping the clutch trying to break a world record or anything.

sweet, i like the car, i just cant afford many more problems...i dont wanna get rid of the car but if it keeps dissapointing me i might have to sell it. But for now im good with it the way it is...also i spoke to my man at the tranny shop and hes gonna make sure that diff pin never comes out. so hopefully all goes well in the re-assembly catagory and ill be back to drving my baby next week sometime:thumb::dsm:
