ok ive had this problem for a few weeks and ive tried everything i can think of. my speedo doesnt work. my vss gear fell off. so i got it out and replaced it.. it still doesnt work. the sensor itself works fine. i turned it and the speedo moved. i cleaned and inspected all the connections. there good. last week i replaced my clutch and while the transaxle was off i look inside by the diff. and thes a plastic ring/gear. and goes on the end off the diff. that ring/gear pops on and off with no effort. could that be it. maybe its broke... anyone know where i can get a new one other that a junk yark. or any ideas what else could be wrong.
thanx.

the ring/gear im reffering to is called the vss drive gear. sorry

ya it seemed very loose. it would just fall off you know where i can get one

I had a similar issue w/ my 99GS. The speedo/odometer quit working. The sensor was still functioning but the pressed gear in the tranny was pushing back against the 90* speedo sensor gear and not engaging it. Also it was pushing the speedo sensor to the side causing a small gap around the sensor and a small tranmission leak... Luckily the gears were fine and I just had to get the tranny gear pressed back on...

When they come off, you are better off buying a new one. Most likely to fall off again.

Really...? I inspected it and it did look fine w/o any gear wear. I did notice that it is only tightened down in place w/ one bolt in a plastic housing, but it wasn't cracked... Are you saying it will most likely mechanically fail sooner or later anyway...?

For some reason, mine quit working when a u-shaped clip had come loose on my linkage between the shifter and the tranny. It finally just fell off one day and I replaced it. Soon as I got back on the road, my speedometer finally worked. Im not exactly sure if it could be the same thing for you, but its worth a try to check that too.

Mine quit working as well, I took the gear off and it looked kinda chewed up, But I still haven't fixed it. I've just been riding with no speedo LOL.
But 30 bucks for a new gear thats not bad at all, I might have to buy one on friday.
Any got pictures of the gear and sensor?.
