Well, several things come to mind. First, you could have a broken flexplate. If the sound is only coming from that area I might and say might rule out the auto tensioner on the timing belt. Bolts could be loose from the converter to the flex plate. This creates quite an interesting sound. By the way, it will egg out the holes in the flex plate and you will have to replace it if you continue running the engine. I would look there first. Post your findings and if possible, a short video clip.
