Any Bay Area Transmission shops recommendation for clutch install?

Let me know what shops you visited and approximate labor costs for a clutch and flywheel install.

Also, any other things that I should replace that is wear and tear or recommendations that I should now about?

Satisfied with their work and turnaround? Any issues with them installing ACT clutch?

I only visit one shop because I've had nothing but success with them. Full Function.

I know you have heard of them, you've been in the DSM game for a long minute but I guess you're trying to figure out if there's other shops out there. In my opinion, if you want a shop to do the work, take it to where it has been proven many times with no negative feedbacks and you don't have to worry about 'Hey what's that noise?' Now is a good time to take it, Sean deals mostly with DSM and Evo customers so i'm sure it would be done and ready in some hours. Matter of fact, just email sean [email protected] if you already bought a clutch and flywheel let him know, he will recommend things to buy or replace or none.

If you haven't bought a clutch, ACT is the way to go

you may want to get a clutch fork and a new pivot ball and shim. I would recommend new logics, but i dont think paul is messing with cars anymore. If you cant do it yourself i would go to fftec because there is nothing but good coming out of that shop.

yeah last i heard paul was doing a little work for fftec and they wanted to hire him as a full time mechanic, but he already has that other job and is re-modeling his house so he had to decline, so either way it would have been fftec ftw.

You might have to pay a little more (not sure about that) but it would be no questions asked peace of mind that its gong to get done right the first time and they will back it up.

Clutch Works Etc. here in San Jose if you're close to the SouthBay area. They are located on Monterey Rd. here in San Jose. They are reasonable and did a good job on my aftermarket clutch/lightweight flywheel setup and timing belts and turbo system. Just ask for Sandra she is the owner and tell her I told you. Mike from DSMtuners.com she knows and she'll give you a good deal. Hope this is helpful.

But for real, I suggest Sean and his crew to do anything DSM related. Be it as simple as a clutch swap or something as extensive as a full build. I have had many things done there, practically my whole car, and I have zero complaints, other than I have no money to do more.

I second Luis and suggest an ACT setup. I run an ACT2900 Street setup with a Fidanza flywheel. If I were to do it all again, it would be with the ACT flywheel. Also replace the pivot ball and fork, and make sure to inspect the master and slave cylinders for wear.

But on a serious note.. Anyone do anything for themselves anymore? WTF Its not hard at all to do a clutch swap and once you do it yourself you'll slap yourself in the face for all the times you paid $500-900 to have someone else do it...

I think I might need to open up a shop just for the hell of it since no on else wants to get dirty, I definitely don't mind. But on a side note if you must have your parts installed by someone else be it you don't have the space or the know how, FFTec are definitely the big name guys to go for in the bay. "Git 'r' dun!"

Is just a preference, not everyone is as comfortable doing their first clutch swap.. maybe he can't afford having their car down for more than a day (if is they first time) or the space to do it...tools.. Whatever the case may be, he is asking for a recommendation where he can have peace in mind that the job was done right.

I knew this was going to be an FFTEC thread haha hands down!!! I am merely testing the waters of what are other alternatives to take our cars for tranny work. Also, was looking to compare costs since labor costs vary greatly from shop to shop, but I am always in for peace of mind which is gonna make me wait a couple more weeks before I move forward with the replacement. Thread could also be a good reference for bay area tuners in the event they cannot tow their car to FFTEC.

As for doing it myself, it is not an option. I have done most of the work on my GST, but undertaking a tranny install on the streets with no garage is a no go for me.

I was set on going with the fidanza but more threads are popping up saying ACT flywheel is the way to go. I am still unable to get a clear answer...

Clutchworks the place Dwnshft recommended I can vouch for, Ive hard transmission work done there, and seeing as they did his car, they have some experience with DSMs by now.

If your paranoid, just go to FFTEC. Too bad paul (newlogics) doesn't work on cars anymore, it would have been a bit cheaper.

Oh I drove luis' old GS-T before he sold it, I think he had 2600 and fidanza if I can recall, it was nice. I also drove a 2100 with fidanza 2g, bah clutch pedal was not stiff enough like the 2600, drive those a lot and you get use to it. But it did drive like stock.

The reason I will stray away from the Fidanza now is because of seeing them come apart. What happens is the flywheel bolts will sometimes dig into the flywheel surface causing the flywheel to come a bit loose. Over time this can cause the flywheel to come apart, along with the possibility of parts rattling loose. Ted, he may very well chime in on this thread, had this happen to him. His flywheel had a catastrophic failure, it completely came apart.

I have a fidanza currently as well. I don't mean to say that it WILL break. But if it has happened more than once, I would not recommend it to anyone anymore.

I also had work done at Newlogics and Paul would always give his time and advise on plans I had down the road, even after the fact, to bad he doesn't have his shop anymore. With that being said, I would also go with the shop he spoke highly of, in Full Function.

If I were to do it again, I would just have gone twin disk from the beginning, although if you REALLY really want to stay single disk I think I would go act 2900 and a fidanza flywheel. They are cheaper, the surface is replaceable, and from what it sounds like, IF your flywheel does break, you just need to give everything the once over and make sure none of your oil squirters popped out,...hehehe

again, if those pictures scare you enough, go with a chromoly act, its what I have, it definately works better than a 20 lb stocker, and is sfi certified.

paul was by FAR the best deal in the bay when he was working. He did my clutch install on sunday (thats right, one day turn around) with one days notice, if that. I might have even called him ON sunday and asked for it to be done. All for 300 dollars. At the time I was very inexperienced. Now that I know more about these little hoes, I would just do it myself as usual. definately need a torque wrench though, no ghetto way to get around your flywheel/pressure plate bolts

That's quite obvious even by continuing further and reading my post where I too later suggest FFTec.

Some people are actually more self sufficient than they think they are. A clutch job really isn't that hard and it wont matter if it is his first or 5th, he wont go for it till he takes the initiative. I just made a comment. I too use to be the guy who had every single part installed by a shop, but at the end of the day I was still a newb. If you're in a group of friends and you might have the fastest car but no one is asking you how to do anything because you're a shop queen. I didn't like. Respect for the car and the owners bank account .

Unless he has a nice stash somewhere I would suggest becoming more handy and mechanic. This is one of many tid bits he'll have to deal with.

That's nice, but he already posted he could do the job.. just doesn't have the space like I said earlier of reasons why someone would take their car to the shop.

But I see your point of view, maybe some rookie might find it helpful..
