The Honda guys did not code their own program, they hacked/reverse engineered the Honda Factory Racing tuning software.

DSMLink is the best tuning software out for a DSM car hands down, anything else is a universal fit hack job.

You want to make your own e-prom chip and tuning software go ahead, it will likely take you 5-10 years but I am sure a person of your skill level will be able to complete the task.

For 1g's, you can do everything and more then dsmlink v3 will be doing already. All you need to do is sign up on the yahoo group and use your brain.

The 2g code never really got going because the intrest isnt there. The 2g owners apparently are content with paying hundreds of dollars for stuff that can be had for free, if the community was willing to develop it.

Im sorry but this stuff really kills me im a big supporter of the honda crowd and they all teamed up and developed multiple progams to alter the stock code (uberdata-crome) and it's all Free! Then there is Dsmer's handing over $550 for the same thing. I guess were are not as determined as them.
Right now, the state of open-source ECU tuning is good, but nowhere near as complete as other vehicles (I've done quite a bit of work on the ECU in our 1g). After screwing around with burning EPROMs (and real-time updates via an Ostrich, if you end up spending any amount of time tuning), it's kind of nice to have everything "just work" in real-time, without having to do whole-hog reflashes and tune with a hex editor.

So, my 2g has DSMLink in it, and we're considering a second copy for the 1g, even though I'm pretty sure I could accomplish most of what I'm after myself. (Although, the collective understanding of the 2g ECU is dramatically worse that the 1g.) I'm sure a lot of other people on the DSMLink forums think the same way. And frankly, access to that forum was almost worth the price of DSMLink all by itself.

Creating 1g DSM ECU Flash Chips

TurboAnything, you're behind the times if you think dsm guys don't hack there ecu. If some one wants to spend the money to have a MUCH better editor and have the codes right there and already deciphered, they'll have more time to tune and get results.

But, if all you really wanted us to know is that you think it's just "stupid" to buy dsmlink instead of putting in the time to understand and hack the eprom, then you havn't read the forum rules.

BTW, I built my own 3" TURBOback exhaust for $150. What do you have? a dejon 3" cat back right? I also was temped to weld up my own intercooler for $85. But I decided not to do that. Considering how many times I've had the engine out of the car and done my own hard work, I figured that I've earned the reward of having a tuning solution that was drop-in and slick as butter. I'm not flaming. I'm jsut pointing out that I've saved gobs of money. I want something that's easy for once. It's hard enough trying to find the time to tune. Not only is DSMLink easy, it's fast and has several features which other's who've hacked the ecu don't know or arn't sharing.

I also have to mention that DSMLink is open source. so we can tweek it to our liking and upgrade if we've researched and/or discovered something.

I'll probably be building my own SMIM over the winter. This and building the exhaust alone will save me enough to buy dsmlink.

Exactly my thoughts. People think you are paying 600 bucks for hardware when in fact the best part of the money spent is being part of the forums. You can be a complete idiot that can't turn on a computer but still be able to tune your car with DSMLink. You know why? Because all you do is post a log on the forums and there are countless people who care enough to look at your logs and tell you EXACTLY what to do to get your car running right. Honestly, I dont think you can put a price on the help and support the forums offer.

Someone can post a thread when some concrete info about release and features are actually out there.
