What gears for 2001 Mustang GT auto?

Def go with 3.73s if you auto


I run 4.10 in my 6speed ls1 and love them, i wish I would have gone with a 4.30 thouh..
 
Either 4:11 or 4:30 ford motorsports gears. I had 4:11 gears in my 99 auto and wished I had gone with 4:30 afterwards. Highway driving will not suffer with overdrive on. Fuel mileage will decrease no matter what gear you go with over the stock 3:23. Going to just a 3:73 will show little or no noticeable difference. Try to stick with ford motorsports gears because the install is easier and they tend to last longer. What ever you do, dont go with a zoom gear. They will wine regardless of how well they are set up.
 
I really wouldnt do a 4.10 gear or a 4.30 in a auto car unless your going to be drag racing alot........and if its your daily driver i advise to go with 3.73s.....
 
Minimum 4.10 with an auto and a 4.6L. I have been racing stangs since I was 16. I also second the motorsport gear recommendation. As others have stated overdrive will take care of any fuel mileage concerns. 3.73's behind that auto you will not "feel" much difference.
 
Also gonna say 4.11 or 4.30 motorsport gears. I have 4.30's in my 99 and i love em.

Have you driven a 99-04 stang with an auto? Even with stock 3:23 gears, they are pretty anemic and the 4.6 is well below its power range in od on the highway at 65mph. We arent talking about a fox body car with a 302 and old aod tranny. But the only thing I have to go by is the fact that I owned one with 4:10 gears in it. It got between 20-22mpg on the highway when driving mild mannered.
 
I had frpp 4.10s in my 99 5 speed gt. One of best mods i did to it, and it was my daily driver. gas mileage wasn't bad either.
 
As a rule of thumb on an auto stang, you will ALWAYS need more gear than a 5spd car. Go get the 4:10s put in. I wouldnt run any higher if the car was closer to stock. If you don't turn the rpm, the larger gear can actually be hindering (at times).

So yea 4:10s and a girdle ftw!
 
Im just around 5speed/6 cars all the time and all I know is my friends 99 cobra was moving out hard with his 4.56s...
 
Minimum is 4.10 for an auto. The 4.30's are perfect for a Cobra where you can rev to around 7K but will also work well on a 4.6 2V.

yes and no.

on a 99-04 Auto GT, 4.1's are a minimum, but you will need a tranny cooler and a shift kit to make good use of them. the added heat from the revolutions will eat the tranny alive. stock is 2.93. maybe a 3.90 gearset if you do alot of freeway driving.

on a 99-01 Cobra id stick with 3.73 or 4.1's, stock are 3.55's iirc. for a 03/04 no higher than 3.73's, 4v 4.6L with a eaton is a torque and rev-happy combination stock. i should know, i owned one for half a year, and unless my stock gears blew for some reason, or i had really fat rears to actually get traction, i wouldnt think about changing them.

though its all about personal preference. For my 02 GT, i cant settle if i want 4.1's or 3.73's, so im going with 3.90's. alot will say stick with FRPP, but most of the issues of gears lie within the install, FRPP's will whine just the same as Motives if installed incorrectly (btw, motive makes frpp gears).

and depending on how you drive, you can actually GAIN city mpg and usually freeway will not suffer as much as most think. the taller gear will increase the torque multiplication factor thus decreasing the amount of load the engine "feels", and thus save mileage cause you will have to use less throttle.

Stock is 3.23. That is what my 99 came with from the factory. I put 4:10's in myself, and put over 60k miles on it without a shift kit or tranny cooler. It was daily driven on the highway and made frequent trips out of state for long periods at a time with no cooldown breaks. Tranny fluid never showed any signs of overheating and tranny shifted hard enough stock to chirp the tires and still had the same positive shift when I sold it. Therefore, I see no real need for the additional parts that you state are needed.

Actually, the stock gears that I removed may have been 3.27, its been over 6 yrs since I removed them.
 
no i meant stock gear on a auto is 2.93. but now that i think of it, maybe its 2.87 and im thinkign 2.93 cause thats the pulley that came with my cobra. but in any case stock gearing on a auto is 2.something.

and yeah, its 3.27 not 3.23 that come on manual GT's. however i still havent found an answer on Stangnet (ricernet) on if the 99-01 cobras have the same ratio as a GT or if they have a 3.55 like an 03/04 cobra does (since they both have IRS Rear)

btw you can also use a handheld tuner instead of a physical shift kit, unless you want to get into the J-Mod or such. the 4r70w is a hit or miss tranny, its either gonna blow or its not. i went through three of them on my Tbird and that car was stock.

I know for a fact that my stock auto GT came brand new with 3.2x. If you are getting your info from stang net, they need to correct it.

As would become the trend for future years 2000 and 2001, the rear axle ratio in the 1999 was 3.27:1 on all models no matter what engine or transmission was used.

And electronic shift improvers or programmers increase line pressure which in turn heats the fluid faster than in stock form. With such a device, a tranny cooler is highly recommended.
 
With an automatic go with Ford Motorsport 4.10's. 3.73's will make a difference, but the 4.10's will be much better. Gas mileage won't suffer that bad, and the Motorsport gears make the least amount of noise. The 4.6 motor is pretty torquey for it's size, and the gears will make a big difference.
 
Stock ARE a 3.27....For an auto that's a daily driver I wouldn't go higher than 3.73 UNLESS you don't do much highway driving then definately step up the ratio. Just don't expect a huge difference from 3.27 to 3.73, it's not that noticable as a drastic jump to 4.10's would be.
