420A 2gNT Best aftermarket clutch & flywheel?

Hey what's going on guys? I am in the market for a new clutch because the one I have now is starting to slip. My question for you 2GNT people is. What is the best clutch for our cars? And do I need to also buy a new flywheel or just resurface it? Thanks guys. If they have the clutch on here I'm in good shape www.performancecenter.com Because I get there parts at cost.

Don't get Spec. Whatever you do, don't get Spec.

South Bend Clutches seems to be the clutch of choice for the 420a guys. While on your site I do see a clutchmasters which should do fine. You have a modular set-up in your car (unless someone went in at some point and changed out the design. Unlikely). That set-up comes as one piece; the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel all together. You can't order the "non-modular" unless you get a flywheel.

I need help here too... my clutch is messed up and I have an oem sittin in my garrage. Could I install just a clutch disc inside of the housing? like this? or do I need the entire kit? Cause I'm installing my trans and I dont have a clutch, turned out my clutch is ####ed up... the spring teeth are all bent somewhat, not all of them but half of them.

Modular clutches mean you have to replace the whole thing. They don't come apart like non-modular units...

Where is the best place to buy? Cause on ebay there is only a stage 1 or 5 clutch, I want atleast a stage 2... But low on cash, since I didn't know I needed a clutch too.

How much torque are you putting down at the wheels?

Your sig says stock block. If you're boosting 7-8 psi on that turbo (220wtq), you can get away with a stock type clutch. When you rebuild/turn up the boost, then go with a clutch that will hold more torque. If you don't have a limited slip, a stock clutch will help control the one wheel peel. Sachs is a pretty good clutch and is what my car (97 RS) had from the factory. It held 8-10 psi with a star turbo kit.

Imposible! My stock block, stock motor, non turbo, I'm killing clutches left and right. My car isn't any ordinary NT DSM. I have owned tons of AWD Turbo DSM's and my last one was a 91 Talon TSI AWD and I was able to keep up with the talon in the GS. And I go through stock clutches like butter! Andy at SBC says Minimal I'll need for that would be a Stage 2 TZ clutch for street use only. And a Stage 3 for both street and race track.

I would just like to say about spec clutches.......I am very pleased with the performance of my SPEC STAGE 3+. It grabs hard but with a smooth feel from the street disc they put in (that is what the + is for). I will stand by it until it proves me wrong (which could be any day)

I can't speak on the other spec clutches, a year ago they had a history of the stage 2's giving out after 10k or so. This was a problem in other cars as well, and from what I have read they have since fixed the problem. But I dont' have first experience with these problems as I have put 16K plus on the clutch.

Southbend is a clutch I would reccomend, as I have heard nothing but good things about them and their company.

Odd that Andy recommended stage 2. When I was looking to upgrade he told me even the stage 1 would be all I needed and more. That's with the numbers I have in my profile. He told me the stage one can handle up to nearly 300 ft. lb., maybe he was confused. Hm..

Although thus far, I cannot complain about the performance of this clutch.

First hand experience that I really didn't want to go into a long explanation of. Brand new stage 4. About 3k very noisy springs. By 5k could not speed shift. Another member had his blow up on him at around 5k, he pressed the issue, sent the clutch in and they told him the clutch was worn out. At 5k. He didn't even race it.

If you search you will find that others had problems with them (while others, like Rand, have had no problems). They definitely have issues with their sprung clutches. Mine went this spring/summer. I raced it. BUT, I have not heard/read any problems with their unsprung.

I kind of put them in the same category as Concept Illusions. Some have had good dealings and some have had terrible dealings (I have had both). But when it comes to making a questionable decision on a part that has a bit of labor to get to (not to mention money spent) I recommend against it.

Um... see, this is a prime example of why eBay stuff can't always be trusted: ACT doesn't make a clutch for our cars. From what I've heard, they're developing something, but it's definitely not available yet.

If you've got no money, and need your car to make money. Look for an OEM one, and see if you can't find some help to do the work yourself. At least you'll be back on the road, making money, and hopefully saving up for one the OEM one goes, you can pick up a nice stage 2 or better southbend.

+1, just to make it clear I'm not reccommending it as a sound clutch, but nore am I promotiing them.

No I do all my work, my car will only see my garrage. And I do have money, but not that kinda money. I can't just down 500+ bucks for one part right off the bat I'd have to save up or build up. And I didn't expect to find a transmission this fast. So yeah. It was 450 bucks for the trans, and I didn't think anything was wrong with my clutch until I got the peice of metal off my engine (old broken trans)

The ebay thing, sorry... I was searching for Eclipse Non Turbo Clutch... and it was showing me 4g64 (2.4L) clutch discs.

I'm seriously getting tired of doing these transmissions and clutches. This is my 4th trans, and my 3rd clutch.

After looking up some oem clutches, I can get a stage 1 for like 3 bucks more then the cheapest oem clutch in town...and I can get a stage 3 for about 10 bucks more then the most expensive oem clutch in town...I guess I just have to sit around and try to save up money to get a clutch while my car still sits in the garrage in peices.

Damn me I'm sorry, I thought I posted this info in here. IDK what you're price range is but there is a sachs racing modular on e-bay that runs about $300. Also, the PT cruiser non turbo clutch that works just as well.

I just did some research, I thinkt hat you allready did.. Right now I think I'm just going to get a stage one from sbc for now, and then when I get my lsd, I'm going to convert to non modular so i can make things cheaper in the long run.

I hope you have good experiences with your SBC.

I've pretty much always used them, as they are down the road from me.. I have never really put down any big numbers. I had a '74 Z28 (mostly stock) that had a SBC, an '89 LT3 j-body with a SBC, '91 Escort with SBC, and my '99 Eclipse GS with a SBC. I've never had any problems with them, and had nothing but quick, accurate and helpful responses while dealing with them.

My camaro probably made the most power, but it was also a larger clutch. And my Sunbird was the most modified, with a small clutch. (still no big numbers, though) I used a Stage 1 Rally. Never a problem.

While Im an advocate of SBC's, let us know if you have any problems with them. Also, you should look into why your breaking trannies and burning clutches so often.

One of my cars after pulling the broken tranny and melted clutch, I discovered the input shaft was wobbly and the clutch and PP destroyed. Three (or four? blocked memories, i suppose) bellhousing bolts were very loose on the one side from the previous owner.

you might want to evaluate why this is happening because i must say i had 120k on my oem clutch and it was working perfect when i removed it during the rebuild and now i hav a spec stage 2, which btw i have heard bad things about as well, and it hasnt given me a problem yet in 2 years.
