I came across a 90 sonata in a junkyard today with 2.4 on the windshield and a fully intact motor

the only markings I could find on the actual block were

?bh4
nw

about halfway down the block below the exhaust manifold

is this the correct motor?

1) Will the 4g64 crank work in the g4cs block?

2) Is anyone running oil squirters in their 2.4l?

3) Head gasket selection worries me. Are there any metal head gasket options for the 2.4l block? Mitsu/Cometic/HKS???

4) 6 bolt 2.0l flyhweel/clutch will bolt up w/o any issues correct?

1. Ive never tried putting a 4g64 crank in the g4cs block. Why would you want a 7 bolt crank in that block anyways?

2. I dont run oil squirters on any of the hybrids I have built.

3. Dont waste your money on an "aftermarket" headgasket. The last thing you want if your detonating at all is your pistons and rods taking that abuse. Id take a failed headgasket anyday over tearing a motor apart for a complete rebuild due to failed rod bearings or a "punched" piston. Ive used the stock mitsu headgaskets and they work wonders, and yes they work just fine with the stock bore.

4. Not if you put that waste of time 4g64 7bolt crank in there it wont.

Remember K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid. The reason being is that sooner or later something will break its a given with these cars.

if its a 2.4 there will be a big "2.4" right under the exhaust manifold that you cant miss. look again.

my 10 minutes browing sonata info leads me to believe that there was no other engine offering in these besides the v6.

am I mistaken in this?

reason I ask is if I'm going to go tomorrow and pull it I need to take a truck rather then my car OMG

is it worth it to get the head and resell it?

shortblock is 100 and the longblock is 150

thx :D

well shit, i thought it was a 4 cylinder that i took to the machine shop  no they came with a 2.4 4 banger too. i would just get the shortblock and use the $50 towards some good pistons.

pardon my horrible grammar. I meant there was the 2.4 4 and the v6 as the only options available

Im surprised at how quickly this thread I started just under a year ago has recently gained some popularity.

Forgive me for the pictures not being "intact" my server and hard drive went out a while back and I lost everything.

For any of you that are still stumped after reading this entire thread please feel free to message me.

I have built 5 of these motors all with forged internals and not one of them has let down yet.

For those of you that doubt my "strange" break in methods be advised not one of the motors I have built has ever had a compression reading below 180 psi. For those of you that baby the engine the first ten minutes or so on a first time fire up, well how can I say this, Good luck.

For those of you wanting that "sleeper" this is the ultimate package. :D

This thread is great. I've found a 2.4L block locally and am going to tackle this shit hopefully over the winter

I have the g4cs block i'm just waiting for my pistons and rods to come in so i can get the machine work done and assemble the block. I took the crank to a machine shop and they said it looks like it needs to be turned. I was going to get it turned but decided to try another shop to get a second opinion. This shop polished it up for $30 and now it looks as if it's bran new.

Thanks to 2.4 turbo hybrid for starting this thread even though his pix don’t work anymore this thread has helped allot. I'll post up some pix of my build up when it's finished.

Would it be possible to bore the g4cs further? Simple curiousity.

You can if you want but Id strongly recommend against it if your cylinder walls are in good shape a honing is all you need.

i have a 7bolt 4g63 in my 93 eclipse awd, am i going to have to buy anything extra for a g4cs, like a new flywheel or would it be better if i just stayed with 7bolt and got a 4g64? not sure how everything works when going from 7 bolt to 6 bolt so excuse the ignorance.

Get a 7-bolt 4G64. FWIW, just because it's a 4G64 doesn't mean it's a 7-bolt. Check it to make sure.

Im also going through with a 2.4 build (eventually). Im using a g4cs, probably wiseco/eagle/clevite along with a SCM61 (I know the owner of precision turbo , no shit!). Ill probably be doing some head porting, and maybe some 1mm oversize valves and cams.

The only problem is, my transmission has recently taken a crap on me, and I think it needs a rebuild very very soon. Ill probably be sending it to dogboxracing.com or TRE for a rebuild/upgrade.

What kind of load would a 2.4/61 setup put on the transmission? What kind of upgrades should I be looking to make to the transmission? Im thinking of getting the "Race Package" from DogBox ( http://dogboxracing.com/services.cfm ).

How would a 11:1 comp ratio do with Water/alky injection?
I might swap my 4g63 for a stock g4cs in the spring just to see.
As far as Im concerned if it lasts the summer It would be good enough.
There should be a a tech article on this swap with the complete parts list. Or is there one out there someplace?

Umm that really wasnt my question. Im not entirely decided on dogbox yet. Ive personally talked to one of the owners of dogbox and its just a small 2 person operation. They are in fact designing a dogbox transmission right now, hence the name. Im still looking around the transmission sites, and shep does seem like the way to go, if I can get the money :| .

Anyways, back to my original question, what kind of load would a 2.4/60 setup put on the transmission? I know Im not going to be making high rpm shifts with a g4cs, so that wouldnt seem like an area I need to overly specialize in. Do the 2.4's really like to eat transmissions, from the extra low end grunt? Or do they simply have almost the same load as a 2.0/60 would?

2) Yes and I highly recommend using them.

i know this isnt the place to ask this, but since it was mentioned i thought i might ask. what the hell is a dog box?
