question about TMO and timming!
I am getting a stage 3 TMO chip soon and was wondering if it will still pull my timming if something is wrong. I know that it takes away fuel cut witch is very scary. but I want to have some safe measures with this! please let me know thanks


bought the chip used for 130 just had to do it plus I have a eprom couldnt pass it by

I don't suggest installing it until you have a datalogger of some sort also.

First things first, its spelled "timing." The double constanant makes the vowel short. Sorry just a pet peeve of mine, and that rule applies to "tuning" too.


To answer the question, the TMO doesnt take away any of the ECUs ability to pull timing when it senses knock. You can cause damage to the engine before you would even hit fuel cut anyway, or you can run well past it and be safe. as mentioned above, datalog if possible to be safe if you are worried. If you use some common sense and learn from mistakes made in the past already you'll be fine. If you try to run 30 psi on the stock fuel system and 87 octane, no safety features working or not are going to save you. If you are flowing enough air to hit fuel cut, you should be thinking about tuning soon anyway.

TMO chip will still allow the ECU to pull timing.

You don't HAVE to have a datalogger to run the TMO chip. I had Tods Mods a year before I had a logger, and managed not to melt anything during that time.

Having said that, and now owning a logger, I HIGHLY suggest anyone invest in some type of logging software.

The Stage III chip has the 2 step stutterbox feature. Do you know the preset launch RPM's for the chip you bought?

I have stage 3 mods and I love it. The additional gauges is a BIG plus! Almost like having a datalogger. I usually have it on the spark advance gauge or octane gauge. Don't worry about not having fuel cut or a very high rev limiter. Do you have the clutch wire? If you don't then you won't be able to enjoy the best part of the TMO mods wich it is the 3 stage rev limiter or "stutterbox". Email Todd Day [email protected] and you can order it for like 10 bucks.

The features on my chip are:
launch rpm 4000 4500 5000 5500 6000
shifting rpm 6500
rev limiter 8500
all the TMO misc gauges
eliminated fuel cut
and other neat stuff like ECU malfuntion codes (you know you can figure out why the CE light is on)

I say go ahead! After two years with my ECU I had no problems. Even with the 8500 rpm rev limiter I never overrev the car because I shift with the pedal to the floor and with the clutch in and the car moving the rev limiter is 6500 rpm's.

I used to use the timing advance guage as well, but if you dont have a logger how do you know how much timing you are getting? I logged so I knew where 20 degrees was, and could then make judgements based on where the needle was. I dont see how it can be useful without having logged it at some point. Its a worthwhile investment either way. Even if you go to DSMlink later on, TMO chips are easy to sell.

I went ahead and bought the chip, I got it for 130 shipped. I cant wait im not sure what RPM settings the chip comes with, he said the clutch wire is included. If its not why couldnt I just make one? looked pretty simple. I I will also be getting a pocketlogger. Then a S-afc and ill be set!

QUestion about shifting so I can just floor it and not let off the gas and as soon as I push in the peddle the rev limiter goes to 6500 so I can speed shift? I dont quite understand this.

* Clutch cut, or "stutterbox" - Mitsubishi in their wildest dreams could have never conceived of this one! With the simple addition of a single wire to the clutch switch, the ECU will temporarily lower the rev limiter a preset amount whenever the clutch is depressed. This means the engine speed will automatically decrease when the clutch is used for shifting, allowing you to keep the throttle planted firmly on the floor between shifts. This leads to faster shifts and less turbo spool up time after the shift.

the security system is kinda complicated to learn at first. you better read up.

Why didn't you just get the dsmlink? ($545)


You already have the 95 eprom. Just get a palm 105 for $100. And that set up will do much more than the TMO set up. You also wont need an S-AFC or any thing else.

I would have gone with the DSMLink since you can adjust timing with it. Plus you don't have to worry about setting up an SAFC. Plus it would have been cheaper, even with the huge discount on the TMO chip.

So that would have actually been the cheaper and better performing route.

YOur missing a huge thing here 645 Total for the logger and DSM link!!! what about the laptop it takes to run the dsmlink?? thats umm well over a grand!

I borrowed one in august, and I'm still using it now, . Didnt cost me a thing. I might start running DSMlink on my palm and finally give my buddy his laptop back

You can find a used laptop for FREE-$400 in good shape that will fit your needs. Just do a search on the web. Will it make it cost more? Yes it will, but why skimp on something so perfect for the 2G because you didn't want to spend an extra couple hundred dollars? DSMLink has all the features of the TMO ECU as well as datalogging function as well as fuel tuning.

If you want to go fast and have the car tuned as best it can, get the DSMLink. If you just want the ability to roll up to a car, floor it to have the stutterbox go to scare him and have him shake, then do the TMO.

Do you really have an EPROM ECU? Did you check or are you assuming because you have a 95? Just curious.

What are you talking about, why would you use a logger with the DSMLink it already loggs alot better than any pocketlogger for the 2G!

Run it with the palm for $645 or with a $200 laptop from ebay for like $745.

The benefits of the DSMLink are worth it!

You will regret going with the S-AFC route!

DSMLink is now compatible with Palm handhelds. evidently someone wrote a program for it. so you don't even need a laptop.
