Okay, searching through the forum, I have not found the true answer to this question. Is porting a stock 2g Exhaust manifold the best way to go, or purchasing a new Evo Manifold or Tubular Exhaust manifold better. I see that other threads have been asked concering this issue, but people go back and forth about porting and going tubular. I understand that heat is critical, as well as several other variables are too so we don't need to discuss those too, but when it comes down to it, which is better.

Right now, I am about to put the full Apexi 3" Downpipe and exhaust on my 1996 GST, and I want to go well beyong the 300 HP when it comes down to power and speed. But I still don't know which way to go. I will definitely be replacing the stock turbo down the road, (sooner than later), and am also going to go with the EVO o2 sensor housing, dejon tool misc, so I just need to know what to do with my Exhaust Manifold. Please help.

sbr manifold > evo manifold ... I just got mine in the mail and it looks awesome. The runners are larger than the evo runners and the price isn't much more either. Also down the road with a larger turbo a spacer plate wouldn't be needed. Definitly worth it.

As far as price vs. performance, if you have a 2g manifold you can't beat porting that, as people have run 11's all day long on that manifold. If you're going to spend money though, the sbr is your next best bet for a manifold. If you're really in for the bling factor, or just HAVE to get a tubular manifold, I say go for the DNP.

Cliffnotes version:

Ported 2g -> SBR -> DNP

I think I am going to stay away from the bling tubular, but what I am getting from people like "herostar" is that the SBR is better than porting? Is there no contest to comparing the EVo, should I just throw that idea out, and choose between porting my manifold or buying a SBR?

yep, if you have the money for a SBR Manifold, do so because it does flow better than the Evo III for only a little bit more.. however if you want to save some money or just looking best bang for the buck....port your 2g exhaust mani.

look at it this way...

2g Exhaust manifold ported - avg. price here is $75 give or take a few (unless your going to port yourself)

SBR Mani - $250 + $50 to port it .

You can sell your current exhaust mani for $80 +...and so your only paying the difference

(btw...EVO III Manifold are very good too though..haha but who wants the middle "kid"..always the middle kid....LOLx)

I'm going to look for a Evo III mani though no matter what others say. their all good and you can find used ones for about $150...my 2 cents

2g Ported Exhaust mani < Evo III < SBR......in terms of flow and obviuously price

ALWAYS REMEMBER!!**!!...When you UPGRADE!...you can always sell your old shyt...2g Mani and o2 housing are upgrades for he 1g's...there will always be buyers...okay i'm done.. haha :thumb:

Sorry, I didn't want to start a new thread for a couple of quick related questions?

1. Does a "ported mani" mean only ported to 7cm or the runners as well? I pay a local DSM shop $200 for a 3 piece porting job and they didn't port the runners.

2. They also didn't seperate the turbo housing and only ported the outlet of my o2 housing, should they have ported the turbo housing outlet, o2 inlet and wastgate as well?

3. Is a proted 2g o2 a woth while upgrade to a 1g ported o2?

Thanks guys.

porting a certain piece can mean different things for different people.

1. i consider a ported 2g mani gasket matched to 7cm on the collector side.. and the runners opened up as much as possible. gasket matching the runner side doesn't make any sense, since the head isn't ported..

2. i think you got jerked... when i ported my o2.. i enlarged all openings include the actually wastegate side runner too

3. yes the 2g is an upgrade to the 1g..

btw, for 40 bucks and 3-4 hours you could have bought and did the work yourself with a grinder/carbide bit

I thought I did too, just didn't know enough to argue back than. You're in Bridgewater, maybe I'll run into you on 287 or 22 one of these days. Thanks for the reply. :thumb:

As far as flow goes, the SBR manifold is molded after a greatly ported EVO3 manifold, so a ported SBR manifold will flow awesome. When porting an O2 housing one should port the outlet and both inlets, and get rid of some of the divider where the wastegate opening meets the exhaust opening. Almost the whole O2 hosing can be ported. When talking about porting the 2g manifold, at a very minimum the collector should be opened up to 7 cm and the inlets on the manifold and the runners should be smoothed.

first of all you DONT have to port the SBR it already comes with a 7cm^2 and free tap for EGT so its only $250. If you DO port it they port the runners which stock already are bigger than the EVO so the only reason to port it is if you runnin a HUGH full T4 garrett trim IMO.
