[RESOLVED] My first time is rapidly approacing

Okay, my first time at the strip is coming up Sept 10 in Utah at one of those grudge race nights. Now, this might be one of only 2 or 3 trips to the track I will be able to make this season and I want them to kick as much ass as possible and get as much trial and error tuning and stuff done so I know what to work on over the winter.

I know I can't buy every mod for all the stages between now and then, but based on what I have (see below), what can you recommend to maximize my results at the next couple of trips to the track?

Any pre-racing suggestions besides all the regular info (air pressure, torque lug nuts, etc) that might be helpful?

I was thinking some plugs/wires, a shift lite to help me learn my shift points cuz I suck, maybe an intake...I'm not made of $$, but I want to get as much out of these trips as possible...and I need to order this stuff ASAP!

Well, just ordered from Horsepower freaks a set of MSD superconductor wires, ngk bpr7es plugs, and a shift lite. Maybe a Walbro 190???? Ideas after that?

I'd throw in a fuel pump just to be safe with that boost. You should be fine, but a logger would help too; just to let you know what's going on with your engine down the strip.

Thanks for the input guys. The SAFC and the injectors probably can't be done by the 10th mostly cuz of money. THat is a lot of money in a short amount of time.

But, a logger cable is certainly realistic.

Now, if I can find a way to afford/get it here on time, what should I do between an intake and a walbro 190?

Or any other ideas.

On 16 psi, I noticed my 255 I put in made a pretty noticable difference. Before, I seemed to fall off in the higher rpms, but after the fuel pump install, it pulled more or less all the way through the gear. At your point, the fuel pump would make the most difference than most things. I'd go with the 255, then a logger. You can get the 190 if you want, but the 255 is the same price, and I never had any problems with mine what so ever.

Okay, well here is the deal: I am getting the 190 for 50 bucks plus shipping which is an awesome deal. However, if I get the 255, what supporting mods would I need, if any? From what I understand, it wouldn't be until injectors would i need to worry about an SAFC or something similar....right? I'm assuming your setup with the GM MAFT is what makes the air "equal" the fuel. Know what I mean?

if your getting fuel cut at 16psi with a hacked maf - then the very first thing you should do is search for boost leaks with a tester

I'll probably do that for sure before the racing. That is the thing I hate most about mbcs, that fact that they are never exact. I might be right on the edge of 15/16, so I'll see if I am getting cut for sure, or if I'm just a shitty driver, then I'll do a leak test. Thanks for the reminder, I should have known to check that.

You can find a 255 on Ebay for less than a hundred bucks shipped.

As for my 255 setup: The 255 was the first mod I had, after my exhaust and boost controller (besides gauges). The 255 did fine with the stock injectors, tuning, and fpr. I also had the boost around 16-17 psi, too. The car was completely fine with this even before the GMAFT setup. With this setup, I got my times around 8.9-8.8 in the 1/8th mile at about 79-80mph traps, which is probably good for a mid-high 13 at around 100-102.

Wow, nice, I'll reconsider the 255. Now, another question:

Where the hell do you tap for a shift light? Where is the "rpm wire"? Is it one of the 4 wires (the white one I believe) going into the crank/cam sensor?

Or, is the the test plug thing near the firewall that is made to plug a tach into so you can monitor your rpms from the engine bay. You know what I mean? Hayes showed there was this plug and I'll be damne, it was actually there. The one on the firewall makes a test light pulse, then if gas is given, the light steadies, same with the white wire on the cam/crank sensor.

Ideas?

Yes, it's the white wire. I tapped my MAFT in there. This is the place where most people recommend tapping for an rpm signal.

Duly noted. Thanks. My eyes are open to fuel control, but the options (correct me if I'm wrong) are pretty expensive and would be hard to afford/obtain in 1 week i.e. SAFCs, etc....right?

Thanks. FWIW I'm looking at a greddy ebc so I can have a computer learn my shit for me so I don't have too much boost when I can't/don't need it.

Well, as it stands, I got a little obsessive. I have now done:

Brakes
Shift Lite
Oil Change


Will be doing (have shipped and/or sitting on door step ready to be installed:
Greddy Profec a (fuzzy logic one)
Walbro 255
MSD Superconductor Wires
NGK Plugs BPR7ES .28 or .30 Gap????????
Datalogger with either Tunerstein or MMCD

So, with any luck I will be able to get all this shit in by Friday morning in time to drive to Salt Lake City for the races that night. Should be fun.

Any suggestions or tips with all the above stuff?

Well, I'll just keep talking to myself.

Got my MSDs from horsepowerfreaks and they sent me ones for the dodge neon and the 2.0 non turbo. So I was slightly pissed.

Talked to them today and the only "fix" they offered is a discount on my next purchase, they'll pay for ground, and I get to pay the difference for overnight shipping plus the difference in the correct wire. So needless to say, that was a pita!!

Oh, and the damn hot sync cable that I just bought doesn't work so I can't log yet. Damn!!

Put the Walbro 255 in and hot damn. Piece of cake install. The vfaq one must be before they made the pump very specific for our rides cuz it was cake to install, no funky wire issues, or anything. Even that bolt came off easy. My fuel cut is vitually eliminated and I am more or less writing this for god only knows, but maybe some newbie can get some help from this.

Tonight is the profec so all should be well, but the install will suck.

let me know how the install on the profec goes, as im thinking about getting one. also with that logger, just watch for knock, and your fuel trims. learn how to launch- thats a big one, awd or not, lauching an awd is a lot diffrent then a fwd, unless your into breaking drivetrain parts.

I'm addicted!!!!!

It rocked. I can't give the exact time cuz my slip is at home, but my RT was .2 something. I was pretty happy about that. Here's how things went down:

Got the plug wires the morning of the race and got them and the plugs in. Not bad, but the 90 degree arm on the wires is a pita to install.

The hotsync cable never started working so no logs.

The profec didn't come when it was "guaranteed" by DHL. So I got it the morning of the race, intalled it, showered, and headed to Salt Lake and tuned it/calibrated it on the way.

As for the race, what a blast. However, as I was in line I realized I had screwed up when wiring my profec and lost power to my crutch of a shift lite (I tend to shift too early.) So, while my friend pushed my car as the line progressed, I tore out my console and console paneling trying to find my tach/rpm wire and a power source to tap into. Needless to say, it worked, but it looked like MacGuyver had a crack-fit on my wiring.

So, it is my turn. The dude signals me up, I drive around the water box. (Remember, first timere here) The dude is waving me forward like I am 30 yards away from the starting line, he must've been in a hurry. So I drive forward pretty rapidly only after I am stopped and asked to put a shirt on-I was wearing my wife-beater after sweating like a horse earlier from the last minute wire job and from nerves).

I drive forward kinda fast thinking the staging lasers must be far away the way the guy was urging me to get forward. There were no painted marks for the starting line, so I didn't really know where I was going. The person in the other lane must've been having the same problem, cuz we tripped the pre-stage and the stage light at almost the exact same time, one after another and the autostart must've been on because before I realized she had pre-staged and staged at almost the exact same time, the next 3 yellows wer hauling ass to the green.

I more or less panicked, slammed the pedal to the floor, and dropped the clutch at the last yellow. I thought for sure I jumped the gun, but I just stayed focues, waited for the blinding light of the shift lite and just kept on trucking. By the time the race was over, and I was so exciting I realized I didn't even hit the damn over take boost button on my fancy overnighted boost controller!!! I ran with only 12 psi and I am able to run 17-18 lbs without a problem. I can't imagine what I would have ran with my full boost. Damn!!!!

So I get my slip, cheer like a little girl, and get back in line. It was almost my turn again and they decide to close it up. I was a little pissed. We had to get there by 6:30p to get our reserved tickets to race, we got in line to race by 11ish, and finally raced by 1:30 a.m. and got turned away at 3ish.

Oh well, I am addicted and there is one or two more at Firebird in Boise.

Other than it being a little loud, it is very nice. Especially after I tuned my Profec, my boost is certainly maxed out.

Actually on mine for whatever reason, it is a black wire. I finally went to the wiring diagram for the ECU, and probed the RPM one with a voltmeter and the engine died. I remembered that happening when I was probing away on the 4 wires where the RPM wire was supposed to be. I checked continuity and it was the same wire. And it was black!?!? Oh well, at least I know which one it is.

Oh, and another discrepency: my 92 takes brake pads for a 91. That sucked cuz I had some Metal masters for a 92. The 92 ones fit the rear, but the fron 92 metal masters were too big so I had to do autozone's in the front. So, remember all, the birthdate of your car is important when ordering parts.
