its a 93 talon tsi awd and i jsut recently had all the belts replaced and water pump, but everytime i turn the car on i hear a loud sqwell and my rpms are up around 1000 in park this problem wasnt happing untill my battery died ( stupid me left the hatch open over nite) but i recharged it and now have that sound and rpms are up high but i only hear the sound for about 5 sec once i start it up then it goes away and once i get driving my idle goes back to 750 ...i dunno everything seems fine once the cars warmed up ...does anyone know what could be the problem.

The belts are probly making the screeeching sound. Maybe because they are new and alittle tight, but it might be that they are OVERLY tighten.

when i bought the car it was making that sound then got new belts put on and it didnt make the sound but ever since the battery died on me its made that sound

and what would make my car idle at 1000 rpm in park ....but it goes away soon after i start driving

Squeeling can also be due to having a weak battery. Even though you recharged it if it is older it is probably nearing it's life expectancy. I had the same problem and got a new battery and now there is no more squeeling

Mine was the alternator belt. It was too loose. Damn, that was irritating.

Ditto for me. Copy and posted from this thread : http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1021143#post1021143

This exact thing happened to me. The belt probably squeaks like a bi*** too. Two causes (or combination of both) :

1) Belt is not tight enough. I found that the hard way after going through 6 belts. What I thought was tight wasn't. Tighten the alternator belt so that you cannot twist it more than 20 degrees or so (twist as in trying to twist the grooved side face up) .

2) Your belt tensioner is bad/loose. I'd especially check the bolt that goes into the waterpump assembly. When I had this problem, mine broke off completely in the hole. This caused the tensioner not to tighten/keep the belt tightend over a period of time. This is why it is fine for the first day or two, then the squealing comes back and then *SNAP* .

Be sure to clean off the melted rubber that results from teh belt walking itself on the crank pulley. The grooves probably are packed with melted rubber.

me belt squeeled, it was the serpentine belt. if you do use belt dressing, dont use to much. i used it and it kept squeeling so i kept putting more on, then finally i took it in to get it fixed, and had to clean up the mess from all the dressing. of course the guy didnt put on the belt right or something, because it still has a small squel to it and the belt is frayed and knocking up against the side of the car... but thats another matter.
