How to replace key lock cylinder?

My key will barely turn the lock cylinder over anymore. Can someone explain the steps required to replace it? And where is the cheapest place to get one new?

Try -don't gasp- WD-40 first. I know, people who "know" will shriek in terror, but the best thing about WD is that the carrier evaporates and leaves almost no excess residue. Locksmiths I've dealt with hate graphite, because it makes such a goddamned mess and doesn't lubricate as well.

If it's sticky because your key's used up, try a locksmith and tell them the deal. They can try to cut a new key with allowance for the wear.

I've heard a few times on here that the dealer can track down your key code from the VIN, but I've not resorted to that personally. If you can get a replacement cylinder, they're held in the handle or trim by a small clip you can figure out by looking at. And, the cheap way would be to swap out with the other door or trunk cylinder, whichever you use least.

Thanks, two keys that Lowe's cut were no good. I hate even taking the key out of the iginition because of how hard it is getting it back in and started. I'll look into a locksmith, personally I think the cylinder is on it's last leg.

fyi if you have the original key the car came w/it will have a key code stamped on it, it will start w/an " E "most likely and be followed by 4 numbers, anyway if you call your dealer w/that number they will be able to cut you a key and have it ready by the time you get there.
Ive also replaced door lock cylinders before and its a pain to do but can be done if you have the patients, theyre held in by pain in the ass clips.

hey bud, might sound dumb, but if you look at the cost of keyless entry for our doors with power locks (touch button on newer cars). You can hook up for about 50 bucks and only use your key for the ignition and maybe something on the trunk. Hope it helps, mine is shot on the driver side and will let you know how it goes.
